The Science Of Ethics As Based On The Science Of Knowledge

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from The Science of Ethics as Based on the Science of Knowledge The present work is a translation by Mr. A. E. Kroeger from the original edition of Das System der Sittenlehre nach den Principien der Wissenschaftslehre, von Johann Gottlieb Fichte (Jena und Leipzig, 1798), together with an appendix containing a chapter on Ascetism, or practical moral culture, translated from the third volume of Fichte's posthumous works, published in Bonn, 1835, the same being a lecture given by Fichte in 1798 as an appendix to The Science of Morals, published in that year. This work, together with the Philosophy of Right, translated by Mr. Kroeger, and already published by Messrs. Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., gives the entire system of ethics as it stood in Fichte's mind. The Science of Morals gives the subjective side to ethics, and the Science of Rights gives the objective side, or the institutions founded to realize morals and protect the individual against attacks upon his freedom. The family, civil society, and the State are institutions which make secure the moral freedom of man. Fichte's writings form the classics of introspection. They furnish the best discipline for training in the ability to seize the activities of the mind and become conscious of their method. Anyone who reflects for a few minutes is competent to bear testimony to the difficulty in seizing the methods of mind-activity. The Role Of Moral Reasoning On Socioscientific Issues And Discourse In Science Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the first book to address moral reasoning and socioscientific discourse. It provides a theoretical framework to reconsider what a "functional view" of scientific literacy entails, by examining how nature of science issues, classroom discourse issues, cultural issues, and science-technology-society-environment case-based issues contribute to habits of mind about socioscientific content. The text covers philosophical, psychological and pedagogical considerations underpinning moral reasoning, as well as the status of socioscientific issues in science education.

On Being A Scientist

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since the first edition of On Being a Scientist was published in 1989, more than 200,000 copies have been distributed to graduate and undergraduate science students. Now this well-received booklet has been updated to incorporate the important developments in science ethics of the past 6 years and includes updated examples and material from the landmark volume Responsible Science (National Academy Press, 1992). The revision reflects feedback from readers of the original version. In response to graduate students' requests, it offers several case studies in science ethics that pose provocative and realistic scenarios of ethical dilemmas and issues. On Being a Scientist presents penetrating discussions of the social and historical context of science, the allocation of credit for discovery, the scientist's role in society, the issues revolving around publication, and many other aspects of scientific work. The booklet explores the inevitable conflicts that arise when the black and white areas of science meet the gray areas of human values and biases. Written in a conversational style, this booklet will be of great interest to students entering scientific research, their instructors and mentors, and anyone interested in the role of scientific discovery in society.

Examining Ethics In Contemporary Science Education Research

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book poses questions on how to work ethically in research on science education. Applying research ethics reflectively and responsibly is fundamental for conducting research with people. It seeks to renew the conversation on how and why to engage with ethics in science education research and to adjust and refine research practices. It highlights both the need for methodological reflections in science education research and the particular ethical research challenges of science education. Science education research involves the study of people – often young and vulnerable people – and their practices. Researchers working within humanities and social science research commonly follow guidelines and codes of conducts set by country-specific ethics committees. Such guidelines function as minimal requirement for ethical reflection. This book seeks to engage the community of science education researchers in a conversation on ethics in science education moving beyond the mere compliance with governmental regulations toward a collective reflection. It asks the question of whether the existing guidelines provided for researchers are keeping up with contemporary realities of the visual presence of individuals in digital spaces. It also asks questions on how participatory research methodologies alters the relations between researchers and practitioners. This book is organized into two parts: Part one is entitled Challenging existing norms and practices. It asks questions such as: What are the conditions of knowledge that shape ethical decision making? Where is this kind of knowledge coming from? How is this knowledge structured, and where are the limitations? How can we justify our beliefs concerning our ethical research actions? Part two Epistemological considerations for ethical science education research centres norms and practices of conducting science education research in regard to methods, validity and scope.

Virtues As Integral To Science Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

By investigating the re-emergence of intellectual, moral, and civic virtues in the practice and teaching of science, this text challenges the increasing professionalization of science; questions the view of scientific knowledge as objective; and highlights the relationship between democracy and science. Written by a range of experts in science, the history of science, education and philosophy, the text establishes the historical relationship between natural philosophy and the Aristotelian virtues before moving to the challenges that the relationship faces, with the emergence, and increasing hegemony, brought about by the professionalization of science. Exploring how virtues relate to citizenship, technology, and politics, the chapters in this work illustrate the ways in which virtues are integral to understanding the values and limitations of science, and its role in informing democratic engagement. The text also demonstrates how the guiding virtues of scientific inquiry can be communicated in the classroom to the benefit of both individuals and wider societies. Scholars in the fields of Philosophy of Science, Ethics and Philosophy of Education, as well as Science Education, will find this book to be highly useful.

Scientific Knowledge And Its Social Problems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Science is continually confronted by new and difficult social and ethical problems. Some of these problems have arisen from the transformation of the academic science of the prewar period into the industrialized science of the present. Traditional theories of science are now widely recognized as obsolete. In Scientific Knowledge and Its Social Problems (originally published in 1971), Jerome R. Ravetz analyzes the work of science as the creation and investigation of problems. He demonstrates the role of choice and value judgment, and the inevitability of error, in scientific research. Ravetz's new introductory essay is a masterful statement of how our understanding of science has evolved over the last two decades.
