The Soviet Communist Party (1986) provides a concise and accessible description, analysis and assessment of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and its place in the Soviet political system. It covers the Party’s structures, membership, personnel and functions, and relations with the state institutions, and discusses the Party’s role in leading other institutions and the press, and the part it plays in foreign relations. The book concludes with an examination of the CPSU in terms of a number of concepts that have been applied to it – as an elite, a class, a ‘totalitarian leader’s following’.

For the time being, but not for long. Siberia, according to some accounts, originally meant "sleeping land". A glance eastward toward the giant land mass beyond the Ural Mountains of Northern Asia will quickly convince you that a new day is dawning there. You can see that Siberia is stirring. Its slumber is ending. The land is awakening. There is movement. Siberia has been overlooked for much too long. Now it is time to look over Siberia.

The contributors in this interdisciplinary collection address the problem of interconnection between the study of the “Other,” either Russian or American, and the shaping of national identities in the two countries at different stages of US–Russian relations. The focus of research interests were typically determined by the political and social debates in scholars’ native countries. In this book, leading Russian and American scholars analyze the problems arising from these intersections of academic, political, and sociocultural contexts and the implicit biases they entail. The book is divided into two parts, the first being a historical overview of past configurations of the interrelationship between fields and agendas, and the second covering the role of institutionalized area studies in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.In both parts the role of the “human factor” in the study of mutual representations is elucidating.
