The Stack

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A comprehensive political and design theory of planetary-scale computation proposing that The Stack—an accidental megastructure—is both a technological apparatus and a model for a new geopolitical architecture. What has planetary-scale computation done to our geopolitical realities? It takes different forms at different scales—from energy and mineral sourcing and subterranean cloud infrastructure to urban software and massive universal addressing systems; from interfaces drawn by the augmentation of the hand and eye to users identified by self—quantification and the arrival of legions of sensors, algorithms, and robots. Together, how do these distort and deform modern political geographies and produce new territories in their own image? In The Stack, Benjamin Bratton proposes that these different genres of computation—smart grids, cloud platforms, mobile apps, smart cities, the Internet of Things, automation—can be seen not as so many species evolving on their own, but as forming a coherent whole: an accidental megastructure called The Stack that is both a computational apparatus and a new governing architecture. We are inside The Stack and it is inside of us. In an account that is both theoretical and technical, drawing on political philosophy, architectural theory, and software studies, Bratton explores six layers of The Stack: Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, User. Each is mapped on its own terms and understood as a component within the larger whole built from hard and soft systems intermingling—not only computational forms but also social, human, and physical forces. This model, informed by the logic of the multilayered structure of protocol “stacks,” in which network technologies operate within a modular and vertical order, offers a comprehensive image of our emerging infrastructure and a platform for its ongoing reinvention. The Stack is an interdisciplinary design brief for a new geopolitics that works with and for planetary-scale computation. Interweaving the continental, urban, and perceptual scales, it shows how we can better build, dwell within, communicate with, and govern our worlds. thestack.org

The Definitive Guide To Arm Cortex M0 And Cortex M0 Processors

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Definitive Guide to the ARM® Cortex®-M0 and Cortex-M0+ Processors, Second Edition explains the architectures underneath ARM’s Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M0+ processors and their programming techniques. Written by ARM’s Senior Embedded Technology Manager, Joseph Yiu, the book is packed with examples on how to use the features in the Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M0+ processors. It provides detailed information on the instruction set architecture, how to use a number of popular development suites, an overview of the software development flow, and information on how to locate problems in the program code and software porting. This new edition includes the differences between the Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M0+ processors such as architectural features (e.g. unprivileged execution level, vector table relocation), new chapters on low power designs and the Memory Protection Unit (MPU), the benefits of the Cortex-M0+ processor, such as the new single cycle I/O interface, higher energy efficiency, better performance and the Micro Trace Buffer (MTB) feature, updated software development tools, updated Real Time Operating System examples using KeilTM RTX with CMSIS-RTOS APIs, examples of using various Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M0+ based microcontrollers, and much more. Provides detailed information on ARM® Cortex®-M0 and Cortex-M0+ Processors, including their architectures, programming model, instruction set, and interrupt handling Presents detailed information on the differences between the Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M0+ processors Covers software development flow, including examples for various development tools in both C and assembly languages Includes in-depth coverage of design approaches and considerations for developing ultra low power embedded systems, the benchmark for energy efficiency in microcontrollers, and examples of utilizing low power features in microcontrollers

Automata And Computability

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This textbook provides undergraduate students with an introduction to the basic theoretical models of computability, and develops some of the model's rich and varied structure. The first part of the book is devoted to finite automata and their properties. Pushdown automata provide a broader class of models and enable the analysis of context-free languages. In the remaining chapters, Turing machines are introduced and the book culminates in analyses of effective computability, decidability, and Gödel's incompleteness theorems. Students who already have some experience with elementary discrete mathematics will find this a well-paced first course, and a number of supplementary chapters introduce more advanced concepts.

Computer Systems Architecture

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Computer Systems Architecture provides IT professionals and students with the necessary understanding of computer hardware. It addresses the ongoing issues related to computer hardware and discusses the solutions supplied by the industry. The book describes trends in computing solutions that led to the current available infrastructures, tracing the initial need for computers to recent concepts such as the Internet of Things. It covers computers’ data representation, explains how computer architecture and its underlying meaning changed over the years, and examines the implementations and performance enhancements of the central processing unit (CPU). It then discusses the organization, hierarchy, and performance considerations of computer memory as applied by the operating system and illustrates how cache memory significantly improves performance. The author proceeds to explore the bus system, algorithms for ensuring data integrity, input and output (I/O) components, methods for performing I/O, various aspects relevant to software engineering, and nonvolatile storage devices, such as hard drives and technologies for enhancing performance and reliability. He also describes virtualization and cloud computing and the emergence of software-based systems’ architectures. Accessible to software engineers and developers as well as students in IT disciplines, this book enhances readers’ understanding of the hardware infrastructure used in software engineering projects. It enables readers to better optimize system usage by focusing on the principles used in hardware systems design and the methods for enhancing performance.
