The Stranger The Voice And Norman

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Norman Cowell is very different compared to everyone else. He was born with Down syndrome, has a history of anxiety attacks, and his only friend in the world is a voice inside his head who mainly berates him for not believing in himself. He may be different, but he has also discovered something about himself that a lot of people struggle with in their lives: Norman knows his place in the world. He wants to join the police so he can make the world a better place for everyone—if only his obstacles weren’t so impossible to overcome. The police won’t accept him because of his Down syndrome. Norman’s uncle and guardian, Larry Cowell, is the superintendent at Sunbury Police Station, and even he doubts Norman’s capability of reaching this goal. When Larry ends up getting an invitation to stay at an old friend’s house for his wedding anniversary, he decides to bring Norman with him. On the first evening, Norman gets a break when he is confronted by the head servant of the mansion, Duncan Noble. Duncan’s son, Dennis, hasn’t been seen or heard from in a week, and Duncan thinks the family he works for, the Hendersons, has something to do with his disappearance. He wants Norman to investigate and find out the truth. Norman finally has a chance to prove he is capable of being a detective. However, with so many obstacles in his way—his insecurities getting the best of him, his lack of knowledge on how to actually work through an investigation, and his fear of bumping into Richard Henderson, his school bully—Norman may be in over his head, but he will try his best to find out the truth. He doesn’t know that a stranger isn’t too far behind, watching his every move.

The Strangers Book

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Strangers Book explores how various nineteenth-century African American writers radically reframed the terms of humanism by redefining what it meant to be a stranger. Rejecting the idea that humans have easy access to a common reserve of experiences and emotions, they countered the notion that a person can use a supposed knowledge of human nature to claim full understanding of any other person's life. Instead they posited that being a stranger, unknown and unknowable, was an essential part of the human condition. Affirming the unknown and unknowable differences between people, as individuals and in groups, laid the groundwork for an ethical and democratic society in which all persons could find a place. If everyone is a stranger, then no individual or class can lay claim to the characteristics that define who gets to be a human in political and public arenas. Lloyd Pratt focuses on nineteenth-century African American writing and publishing venues and practices such as the Colored National Convention movement and literary societies in Nantucket and New Orleans. Examining the writing of Frederick Douglass in tandem with that of the francophone free men of color who published the first anthology of African American poetry in 1845, he contends these authors were never interested in petitioning whites for sympathy or for recognition of their humanity. Instead, they presented a moral imperative to develop practices of stranger humanism in order to forge personal and political connections based on mutually acknowledged and always evolving differences.

The Mind Of The Horse

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Horses were first domesticated about 6,000 years ago on the vast Eurasian steppe, yet only in the last two decades have scientists begun to explore the mental capacities of these animals. In The Mind of the Horse, Michel-Antoine Leblanc presents an encyclopedic synthesis of scientific knowledge about equine behavior and cognition, providing experts and enthusiasts alike with an up-to-date understanding of how horses perceive, think about, and adapt to their physical and social worlds. Much of what we think we know about "the intelligence of the horse" derives from fragmentary reports and anecdotal evidence. Putting this accumulated wisdom to the test, Leblanc introduces readers to rigorous experimental investigations into how horses make sense of their world under varying conditions. He describes the anatomical and neurophysiological characteristics of the horse's brain, and compares these features with those of other species, to gain an evolutionary perspective. A horseman himself, Leblanc also considers the opinions of renowned riding masters, as well as controversies surrounding the horse's extraordinary mental powers that have stirred in equestrian and scientific circles. The Mind of the Horse brings together in one volume the current state of equine research and will likely stimulate surprising new discoveries.

The Torture We Adore

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Torture We Adore is a collection of twelve short stories, all focusing on the tragic and morbid reality of attraction, contradicting the traditional view of relationship, love and sex. The book presents, in graphic detail, the insanity that one can be driven to by love or lack thereof. Whether it’s in the form of a story of a woman who falls in love with a convicted wife beater, a man whose complete devotion to his wife also fuels his blackest hatred or the tale of a brother and sister whose dependence on each other leaves them incompetent to ever separating. Underneath all gore and disturbing detail lays a theme of deep emotional scarring that can come from falling for another person

Freedom Of F G Speech Baby

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Freedom of F-----g Speech Baby is the perfect title for this book, for it is what we all want to be. Its a no holds barred book with words unhidden and unhindered. I am so glad that I live in a country that allows me to have this freedom of speech and that has allowed me to write this book and I am one who is not afraid to use this opportunity to its fullest extent. This is an author who will never shy away from using strong vocabulary. Some of my thoughts and vocabulary that are used in this book may shock you and make you shake your head in disbelief. This book is not for the timid and shy readers. It is graphic and modern, because that is what we have become in 2013; very descriptive and contemporary. So enjoy what this wild natured mind has to offer the writing world. Enjoy the trip of a mind that is not afraid to speak and put her words on paper for everyone to read. This book portrays a woman of confidence that is shown in her writings and she has written some self- help and healing poems that will turn you into the self-assured person that you should be. That is why I chose the title Freedom Of F---ing Speech baby, because I believe that everyone should have that opportunity to write and speak freely because it shows a great sense of confidence. To me there is nothing better for a writer than writing whatever you feel at the time and if it is uncensored it makes its all the better; and having the chance to make a book of these feelings is one of the greatest achievements a person can offer to the world. I thank you for this opportunity.
