"Tenmile Country" refers to an area of land in Greene and Washington counties in southwestern Pennsylvania that is traversed by Tenmile Creek. During the early colonial period, this region of the Upper Monongahela, like that of Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) slightly to the north and what would become Morgantown, West Virginia to the south, was inhabited by the indigenous peoples; by French missionaries, trappers, and traders; and eventually by a number of intrepid British "trans-Allegheny pioneers." After 1750, however, the Tenmile Country--like the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia-- became a desired place of settlement or stopover point for the huge migration of Scotch-Irish, German, and British colonists. Migration to the Monongahela took place over 3 main routes: along the National Pike via Winchester, Virginia; through the Shenandoah Valley to the head of the Cheat River and from there to the Monongahela; and along the Lincoln Highway to Ligonier, Pennsylvania and thence along Jacob's Creek to the Monongahela. The tributaries of the Tenmile Creek were inundated by pioneers--many of them German or Scotch Irish, some of them the spillovers from the great migration into Kentucky, and still other travelers and immigrants who passed through Baltimore en route to one of the great migration trails. This book was originally published as a series of newspaper articles. The work commences with an historical overview of settlement in Tenmile, and concludes with an index of some 30,000 entries. In between, the genealogist can savor 500 or more family histories, of varying lengths. The sketches touch on more than 2,000 main families. This book is a reprint of Leckey's massive collection of genealogies pertaining to the 18th-century settlers of Pennsylvania's Monongahela Valley. Like leaves in the wind, the lives of seven generations of the Elwell Family were driven by early American history to progress and peril. Fourteen years after the Mayflower, Robert Elwell landed at the Massachusetts Bay Colony and prospered in one of the first settlements in the New World. His children fought in the first Indian War and endured the Salem Witch Trials. A new frontier in West Jersey became a refuge and starting point for a westward migration that lasted for over a century. Patriot Thomas Elwell sought his fortune on the Allegheny frontier. Thomas married and moved west to Fort Cumberland to welcome troops mustering to put down the Whiskey Rebellion before homesteading in Ohio's Knox County. His children pushed westward to build lives in the new Northwest Territory before their children fought in the Civil War.

Brothers Henry Enoch and Enoch Enoch came to Virginia before 1750, settling on the sparsely populated frontier west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their Virginia years were defined by the French and Indian War (1755-1763) and their close association with young George Washington. By 1757, their children had begun to explore more westerly lands, where they ultimately resettled with their families in what is now Washington County, Pennsylvania. Henry Jr., David, and Enoch Enoch were among the first "over the mountain men," settling west of the Allegheny Mountains by 1767. Their Pennsylvania years were defined by the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the Indian Wars (1786-1795). By the turn of the century, the Enochs began looking west again, this time to the more promising lands of Ohio.

This is a companion book to Pastor John Corbly, his biography. It is about his neighbors in Greene Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. The first recorded surveyed plat of Greene Township was made in 1796. This book includes all information available from official records about each person who bought the first tracts of land in that township during his, and later, his surviving wife, Nancy Ann Lynn Corbly's lifetime. Only factual, recorded information from Pennsylvania and Greene County archives, historical society data, family Bibles, and personal family histories has been used. Charles Woolverton emigrated from England sometime before 1693 and settled in New Jersey. He married Mary in about 1697. They had nine children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
