The Trinity Circle

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Trinity Circle explores the creation of knowledge in nineteenth-century England, when any notion of a recognizably modern science was still nearly a century off, religion still infused all ways of elite knowing, and even those who denied its relevance had to work extremely hard to do so. The rise of capitalism during this period—embodied by secular faith, political radicalism, science, commerce, and industry—was, according to Anglican critics, undermining this spiritual world and challenging it with a superficial material one: a human-centric rationalist society hell-bent on measurable betterment via profit, consumption, and a prevalent notion of progress. Here, William J. Ashworth places the politics of science within a far more contested context. By focusing on the Trinity College circle, spearheaded from Cambridge by the polymath William Whewell, he details an ongoing struggle between the Established Church and a quest for change to the prevailing social hierarchy. His study presents a far from unified view of science and religion at a time when new ways of thinking threatened to divide England and even the Trinity College itself.

My Journey Into The Trinity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excitement of Triune truth is matched by excitement of telling about Gods eternal evangelizing of me. Gods pursuit makes the common, such as the following, become a base for exciting, uncommon studies and results. Medora Junction, between small town and campus, promised changes. Shared moments of people-watching with Dad from the drug store door step, spoke of grandeur in persons. Defeated faces of two African American corporals, haunted my social concerns. Moms rocking chair rhythm of gospel singing, rocked gospels into me. Boyhood railroad adventures helped recognize adventure in theological insight. Value of professional skill was seen in Dad behind the drug store prescription screen. A summer evening walk through Medora heard feet moving to varying rhythms of gospel singing. Church bells told of the sound of Gods welcoming grace. Such common experiences support uncommon, disciplined, entertaining and exciting scholarship of professors, who presented theology of the familial, in-history, personal, relational GodFather, Son, and Holy Spirit. Their mutuality unified the workings with the natural order that provided for my coming to be, gave saving words and promises of Jesus Christ and, through the Spirit, sustained me in the present and the futurethese three in perfect concert evangelized me. An exciting story to tell.

The Trouble With The Trinity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

One God or one with several forms? Or maybe two, three, or perhaps many separate Gods? If you seriously study all the "Christian" religions, you will find that each of these possibilities is claimed. That is one "trouble" with the Trinity-there are just too many possibilities. Which, if any, is right? Which view does the Bible support? And if it supports one view, how strongly and in exactly what way? The Trouble with the Trinity attempts to study every verse in God's Word that links a name for one or more members of the Godhead with a nearby word or concept for God. Nearly a thousand verses meet this condition. Collating them into logical categories reveals the eight, and only eight, possible ways and combinations that could help us understand that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is Three in One. Moreover, when the verses in each of these eight ways are further organized, they provide deep insights into the nature of God. And when the eight ways are woven together, they reveal a startling symbol with relevance to Judaism, Christianity, Islam, geometry, and our neural network. Furthermore, these insights are reinforced through the symbolism of the colors used in the tabernacle when these colors are properly applied to the eight parts of the symbol. The book incorporates mathematics and science, especially the biological sciences, written with plain language, into the discussions of the Trinity. Some of the proposed connections have never been posited elsewhere. It also considers other symbols and icons of the Trinity for their ability to reflect aspects of the Triune Godhead. The Trouble with the Trinity is not written for the theologian, although it includes a section that presents a theological discussion of the Trinity. Rather, it is written for those who are curious about or confused by the Trinity. The Trinity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Though trinitarian theology has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the last few years, there is a lamentable lacuna in much of this study, a gap between intellectual rigor and concrete experience. While the contributions of Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas are important to any foundational study of the Trinity, a strictly philosophical and scholastic approach has proved to be both contentious and problematic. As a result, many are left wanting for more meaningful expressions of this profound mystery. Anne Hunt fills this lacuna and offers a fresh avenue of reflection. She explores the distinctly trinitarian insights of a number of Christian mystics 'Hildegard of Bingen and Meister Eckhart, Bonaventure and Elizabeth of the Trinity, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, William of St. Thierry and Julian of Norwich. Readers will find that the mystery of the divine life and love that was so tangibly given and so palpably experienced by these mystics is now offered to us through them. Anne Hunt is faculty dean of theology and philosophy at Australian Catholic University. She is currently vice president of the Australian Catholic Theological Association. She is author of Trinity: Nexus of the Mysteries of Christian Faith, What Are They Saying About the Trinity? and The Trinity and the Paschal Mystery.
