The Urban Logistic Network

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited collection examines the formation of urban networks and role of gateways in Europe from the Middle Ages to the modern world. In the past, gateway cities were merely perceived as transport points, only relevant to maritime shipping. Today they are seen as the organic entities coordinating the allocation of resources and supporting the growth, efficiency and sustainability of logistics (including both the transport and distribution of goods and services). Using different historical case studies, the authors consider how logistics shaped urban networks and were shaped by them.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Managing Urban Logistics provides new insights based on the most recent research, theories, and developments in technological and ICT solutions, contemporary corporate trends, the re-evaluation of the role of authorities, and much more. The book shows how to manage these complex urban logistics issues using a long term, systemic perspective where urban freight distribution is an integral part of the entire urban mobility system. It examines the convergence points between mass and customized deliveries, thus modeling the decision processes, trade-offs and tolerances behind these processes to enable a more fluid sharing of urban space.Users will find an approach that tackles these issues from an empirical viewpoint that is based on analysis from a wide set of cases in urban environments around the world. A fresh and unique multidisciplinary approach that is based on solid theoretical background and a pragmatic management standpoint makes this book a must have for those involved in urban logistics. - Blends theory with real-world cases to create viable solutions - Uses an interdisciplinary approach to city logistics in a structured and organized way that is useful for all stakeholders - Shows how to identify logistics profiles and build a logistical map of the city - Examines the technological solutions that can be used to support different business models, adopting a rational, innovative, problem-solving approach to the movement of urban goods

Future Sustainable Urban Freight Network Design In The Large Cities And Megacities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book aims to investigate a long-term strategy for sustainable urban logistics. The literature evidence exhibits that considerable research on urban logistics lacks long-term planning and rarely considers the urban spatial development and integration of urban distribution innovations. Currently, 11 distribution innovations can be used for future sustainable urban freight transport. According to a systematic discussion, this book formulates the conceptual model of Sustainable Inner-urban Intermodal Transportation (SIUIT) for future urban logistics. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis illustrates that future integrations of distribution innovations comprise operational and technological integration. To this end, the morphological analysis method is employed to discuss their feasible solutions based on the SIUIT model. After that, combined with the trend exploration of urban spatial development on large- and megacities, this book constructs the 2.x Modula & Sustainable Urban Freight Network to improve the flexibility of the future sustainable logistics transformation. About the AuthorDr. rer. pol. Zhangyuan He graduated from the University of Bremen. He currently undertakes postdoctoral research at the School of Urban Planning and Design, Peking University.

Sustainable Urban Logistics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Urban logistics has been a subject of interest to researchers and practitioners for more than 20 years in France and Europe, and more than 40 in the United States. Nevertheless, the subject remains difficult to address by a lack of unification in the definitions and proposed methods but also by what makes its great richness: the diversity of actors and the pluridisciplinarity of the methods and techniques available. This book, which synthesizes more than 10 years of personal research on the subject, but also experience within different teams and projects, intends to bring a unified vision (and more and more followed at the international level) on logistics planning Urban development. It begins with an overview of research in urban logistics and then describes and defines the main components: flows, actors, infrastructures, management components, technologies, regulations and financing actions. A unified vision of these elements as well as the definition of sustainable urban logistics is proposed. Then, the book presents the basics of planning and managing sustainable urban logistics. First, the basics of the before-after analysis are introduced, not only for the experiments but also for the simulation of scenarios. To carry out this type of analysis, two main groups of methods are needed: methods for estimating flows and methods for calculating evaluation indicators. The book presents the main global standards and dominant models for the estimation of the urban freight transport demand, i.e. of freight transport needs in urban areas. Then it presents the methods for estimating and simulating transport and distribution schemes (i.e. transport supply) as well as a proposal for integrated supply-demand modeling. All these methods are presented for immediate application to practitioners, accompanied by summary tables and parameters necessary for their implementation. As far as evaluation is concerned, the book presents a framework for the choice of sustainable indicators and scorecards. Second, the main methods for economic, environmental, social and accessibility assessment are presented. They are accompanied by tables and figures necessary for their implementation. Finally, the main applications of the proposed methods are introduced. The book is meant to be a practical guide to applying the main methods from scientific research to a practical context, and presents examples of quantified and explained application. It is thus the first book that summarizes and presents the main unified methods to help the different decision-makers to implement them in their actions of planning and management of the urban logistics and the transport of goods in town.

The Routledge Handbook Of Urban Logistics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Routledge Handbook of Urban Logistics offers a state-of-the-art, comprehensive overview of the discipline of urban and city logistics. The COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in internet shopping in particular have placed new demands on urban logistics which require innovative technological and policy responses. Similarly, the necessity for sustainable urban logistics offers both a challenge and opportunity for development and seeks to address traffic congestion, local air quality, traffic-related degradation, the use of energy, safety aspects and noise. Featuring contributions from world-leading, international scholars, the chapters examine concepts, issues and ideas across five topic areas that reflect the increasingly diverse nature of current research and thinking in urban logistics: transport modes, urban logistics sectors, technical analysis, policy, and sustainability. Each chapter provides an overview of current knowledge, identifies issues and discusses the relevant debates in urban logistics and the future research agenda. This handbook offers a single repository on the current state of knowledge, written from a practical perspective, utilising theory that is applied and developed using real-work examples. It is an essential reference for researchers, academics and students working in all areas of urban logistics, from policy and planning to technology and sustainability, in addition to industry practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge.

Ta Q Bin

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book reveals the secrets of Yamato Transport’s success in maintaining and extending its leadership in Japan’s domestic parcel delivery market. It presents six cases that illustrate how Yamato's flagship service, TA-Q-BIN, has evolved since the 1970s to the benefit of consumers, particularly urban dwellers, and how TA-Q-BIN has become an integral part of Japanese daily life. Each of the six unique cases serves as an independent teaching case for undergraduate and graduate students, describing the particular service design, operations management, innovation, supplier management, and social responsibility within the context of an Asian last-mile logistics service provider. The book also includes insightful presentations of the challenges facing supply chain and logistics service providers in Asia, and their innovative responses to these challenges using real-world cases. Besides featuring interviews with Yamato’s key stakeholders and their strategic clients, Japan-based and other Asia-Pacific Yamato operational centers make up the field method included in this book, while secondary data is drawn from trade and academic domains. Some of the cases are written in a didactic fashion, with suitable stopping points for students to pause and deliberate over the managerial issues confronting the decisions that Yamato makes during the course of its business and operational strategies. The results are particularly useful to readers interested in how operations and logistics decision-making are practiced in a homogeneous Asian context and in an urban environment. This book is essential reading for undergraduate and MBA students, as well as practitioners in industry.
