The Vespa Handbook

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Offers 40 concrete, practical tools and activities that will supercharge learners' ambition, organisation, persistence and determination. Where some education books focus on how individual teachers might sequence and deliver pieces of information in the clearest, most helpful and supportive way, engaging as many learners as possible, this one is different. This book looks at how you can help learners manage their workload and take control of their own knowledge and skills. It explores the characteristics, qualities and habits of successful students and shares forty replicable tools and tactics that all students can use immediately, both in and out of the classroom – activities that will help them to set goals, work more efficiently, organise their resources, revise more effectively and solve problems. This book is a perfect introduction to the VESPA approach, as well as being a practical addition to previous resources. The VESPA Handbook will help teachers develop the five key characteristics and behaviours that students need to be successful: vision, effort, systems, practice and attitude. When it comes to achieving academic success, these characteristics are crucial. Suitable for teachers, tutors and parents who want to boost academic outcomes in 14–18-year-olds and equip them with powerful tools and techniques in preparation for further education and employment.

The Spying Game Amleto Vespa S Chinese Affair 1884 1944

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

THE SPYING GAME – AMLETO VESPA ́S CHINESE AFFAIR (1920 – 1944) Amleto Vespa, (L’Aquila 1884 - Shanghai 1941), spent most of his life in Siberia, Manchuria and China; first as a spy for the Japanese and as an arms dealer, later as a spy for the Chinese, and again as a spy for the Japanese, during Japan’s occupation of China; finally, in 1938, he was linked to the Americans. Some of the secret missions and duties he was assigned as a secret agent were eventually detailed in the book "Secret Agent of Japan", published in London in 1938, and in the U.S. one year later, where he heavily denounced the Japanese occupation of China. He died mysteriously and was likely killed by the Japanese in the Philippines, in 1941. Soon after, his wife and children surfaced in the United States where they disappeared from public view. The reenactment of his biography (Vespa wrote very little about himself) was based on documents sourced from the Historical Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic and family letters sent to Italy. Amleto Vespa’s exploits were retraced in their historical contexts: the end of World War I in Siberia, the Italian recruits who built the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Russian Revolution, the fall of the Chinese Empire, the Warlord Era in China, the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, and the Shanghai spy war of the 1930s. The book ends with his mysterious demise and the wall of silence that surrounded his book after the end of World War II.

The Underwater Handbook

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This handbook attempts to translate data on various parameters of man's capability in underwater and hyperbaric environments for those without a background in the life sciences. Accomplishing any multifaceted task requires team work, and effective team work depends on facile communication among all participants. To communicate properly, all parties must understand each other's problems and be able to speak a similar language. To this end we believe that this publication will go a long way in furthering the understanding and communication necessary for maximum achievement. The U. S. Navy has a fundamental interest in all types of activities connected with the ocean and is especially interested in the growing field of manned underwater and hyperbaric activities. Thus, the manuscript for this comprehensive book was developed under Office of Naval Research contract N00014-67-A-0214-0013 with The George Washington University. We acknowledge with appreciation the financial support and technical guidance for this undertaking by the Naval Medical Research and Develop ment Command of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as well as by the Engineering Psychology Program and the Physiology Program of the Office of Naval Research. JOSEPH P. POLLARD Director Biological and Medical Sciences Division Office of Naval Research vii Preface A need was felt for a book that would document the relationship of the human being to the underwater hyperbaric environment in such a way that the individual unfamiliar with the psychological or biomedical jargon could still understand and appreciate the information.
