BOOK EXCERPT:
The human has always prided himself as an exceptional ‘moral species’ but has always been haunted by two questions: ‘Why am I not good when I want to be; ‘why do I do bad when I don’t want to’. This is at the heart of what scriptures and sages have long alluded to as the eternal internal struggle-between good and evil - that wages in the human consciousness. The book posits that much of our confusion and angst stems from our inability to recognize the ramifications of this ‘war’ between two sides of our own ‘self’. It is because we are ignoring this ‘war’ between two sides of our own ‘self’. It is because we are ignoring this war that we are losing all other wars of the world. That ignorance is the primary source of all the horrors, malevolence, and violence that fill us with so much dread. But a ‘favorable’ outcome is possible only if the forces of goodness are aided to get an upper hand consistently - and that calls for two cathartic changes: consciousness-change by inducing a turn from the mind to the heart; and contextual-change, by radically reconstructing the roles of morality, money, and mortality in our everyday lives. The book offers a menu of insights and options we all can use to tilt the scales in the war waging inside each of us.

BOOK EXCERPT:
By any measure, we are at an inflection point in human history. As the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has shown, it is not only the planet that is at risk but our very destiny. We must take an unblinking look at who we are compared with who we want to be or ought to be. That entails going within to discover what is happening deep inside our consciousness. This book suggests that the root of our troubles is our ignorance that there is a perennial war within each of us between good and evil. Like in any war, both sides need supplies. But in this internal war, they must come from outside, in the shape of our daily doings and choices. As you read, you’ll get a roadmap on how to make better decisions and contain the evil within. Get answers to questions such as: • Why must we fix the inside before fixing the outside? • How can we prevent evil from overwhelming our consciousness? • How can the good inside of us overwhelm the bad outside? There is no nobler calling for any of us at this pivotal point than to volunteer to join others committed to bettering themselves so we can rescue mankind from self-annihilation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The War Within was written as a series of individual papers of encouraging faith. As Brian Wieck puts them together in his debut book The War Within, he learns to rebuke the lies he believed to be true and turn his life over to Jesus Christ. The War Within begins each paper with a lie and ends with the truth through a rediscovered faith in Jesus Christ. Brian Wieck literally changes his mind as he progresses through each paper and draws closer to God. As the book progresses, so does the healing power of Jesus Christ.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The War Within is a complex, virtuoso analysis of an Australian life written by an unabashed and unrepentant author- an acidic dissertation on the roles of genes, environment and litany of trauma play in developing a person's character, and at the same time, a sauntering chronicle of social mores. In turn, we follow the life of the author as he comes to terms with male status anxiety- apparently inexhaustible in its capacity to cause suffering. Along the way, Tate examines the dark crevices of the male psyche as he battles inner demons from the Vietnam War and the unconditional love of his beautiful Christian Wife, Carole. Above all, this memoir is a celebration of the human condition, of a man with a can-do, cavalier attitude to life and is an outstanding contribution to Australia's rich heritage of memoir.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The War Within By: Cornelius Harris Accounting day-to-day encounters with the outside environment set Cornelius along a path of journal writing, encouraging the idea to make The War Within a memoir. The completion of his book details being affected emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. He articulates how profoundly his pain and suffering affected him, pulling out emotions, that he beautifully articulates concerning his social environment and how it shaped him. During this process, he uses the theme of religion/spirituality as a tool to enlighten him about the nature of his existence and this interplay with the supernal universe, as he accounts his psychic impressions, that he refers as God, or spirit guides, sent to help him understand who he is as a hurt Black, gay man. Inter-generational healing becomes crucial in understanding his family dynamic, by using his rejection, shame, and trauma as an impetus for self-revelation. He deals with the struggle of understanding his sexual identity around the context of a heteronormative society, and how he endured unbearable discrimination, and stigmatization from a ruthless society. This drove him in the door of Alcoholics Anonymous, a source he uses as strength to also heal from being marginalized in his own community. By reconciling those fractured social networks that had once hindered him from embarking on self-discovery, he is able to find a path to discover himself as a Black, gay, veteran, living within the cultural milieu of a American narrative that tells a different, less noble story of who he is expected to be, by daring to break historical stereotypes and living his own truth.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book deals with the nature of spiritual life and what takes place when a person is born again. It particularly delineates the result of having a new nature and yet retaining a mortal body. The result of regeneration is that two differing natures reside in the body of the person in Christ. One is adapted to this world and is basically sinful. The new nature, or the new man, is destined to be forever with the Lord in heaven and is righteous. There is a fierce conflict between these natures that must be understood. The new nature is to mature while at the same time doing battle with the old nature, or old man, which cannot enter the kingdom of God. A proper understanding of this war within delivers one from the confusion, self-condemnation, and lack of insight that invariably accompany a fundamental ignorance of this matter.

Eight more contributions by Monique Alexandre, Peter Bruns, Judith Kovacs, Salvatore Lilla, Friedhelm Mann, Alden Mosshammer, Elias Moutsoulas, and Lucian Turcescu focus on further general and particular topics of the homilies as their eschatology, the meaning of the word makarios in all of Gregory's works, the notion of justice, and Gregory's Theology of Adoption, as well as their relationship to Syriac theology, Clement of Alexandria, Neoplatonism, and Gregory's Homilies on the Song of Songs. The third and fourth part add ten studies reflecting the present overall state of Gregorian research.
