The Way Of The Lord In The Book Of Isaiah

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What is the "way of the LORD" in the book of Isaiah? Many scholars have adopted Walter Zimmerli's proposal that the "way" in Second Isaiah is a literal and physical highway extending from Babylon to Jerusalem only to be reinterpreted as a spiritual, metaphorical, and pious way of living in Third Isaiah. This book will properly define each mention of the "way" in Isaiah as well as provide a coherent interpretation of this theme's theological significance within the book. The way of the LORD is initially conceived of in the 1st half of the book as a highway leading to Zion common to both the dispersed Israelites as well as the nations. In Isaiah, Chs 34-35 provide a paradigm of what this way will entail and its theological significance.

The Name And Way Of The Lord

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book discusses the first-century implications of applying Old Testament texts about the divine to Jesus. It summarizes recent views on the significance of this practice. It then collects pre-Christian and first-century Jewish parallels, and notices that most centre on the angel, wisdom, glory and word of the Lord, although application to non-divine figures also occurs. The evidence is that some Christians in the 50s worked with a redefinition of monotheism in which they included the Father and Jesus. Such a view explains the New Testament salvation-historical perspective in regard to the Old Testament belief on the theophany of God and the belief in God as the object of invocation.

Isaiah

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book of Isaiah uses both prose and poetry to engage readers in a drama of great emotion and intensity. Although the circumstances under which this book took its present form remain in scholarly dispute, this commentary highlights its larger purpose-to provide the people of Judah and Jerusalem with hope for the future and the will to re-embrace their ancestral religious traditions. Leslie Hoppe assumes the composite character of the books and approaches the work as a whole with its own literary and theological integrity. Unlike many other contemporary commentaries on the book of Isaiah, the divisions of the book used here focus on its literary shape rather than the history of its composition. With this approach, we recognize that the book of Isaiah is an expression of faith in the Holy One of Israel and in the future of Jerusalem, both of which have decisively shaped the faith of Jewish and Christian believers over the centuries. Leslie J. Hoppe, OFM, is an adjunct professor at Catholic Theological Union after serving on its faculty for twenty-four years, and serves as the provincial minister of the Assumption Province Franciscans. He has written several books on biblical studies and archaeology, including The Holy City: Jerusalem in the Theology of the Old Testament (Liturgical Press, 2000). He is a former editor of The Bible Today and currently serves on its editorial board.
