BOOK EXCERPT:
When Doug Gosling was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at the relatively young age of forty-nine, it was the beginning of an incredible journey of profound discovery. As he says, I came to realize that cancer was really two diseases in one; a physical disease of the body and also an emotional disease a cancer of the mind, if you will. In The Wolf at my Door, Doug engages us in a deep and open discussion of the two faces of this deadly disease. His incredible story has relevance to people with any type of cancer and, equally, for those who love and care for them. The Wolf at my Door discusses in vivid detail the various stages of cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and recurrence and explores the deep emotional impact that cancer has on the person with the disease and on their loved ones. It is an intensely intimate story told with no holds barred, dealing openly with difficult subjects such as depression, spirituality, fear of recurrence, incontinence, sexual function and death. It will inform and often entertain, offering tremendous insight to anyone touched by cancer. This book will help you!

BOOK EXCERPT:
In As the Wolf Howls at My Door, Brossard takes on the '70s: a time of despair as the dreams and ideals of the '60s were cashed in for political opportunism and crass materialism. America's inglorious exit from Vietnam, the increasingly desperate actions of counterculture protest groups, the rise of repressive CIA operations, the commodification of the American wayall this and more is captured here in Brossard's inimitable style. That style discards realism in favor of a free-form fiction that mixes French surrealism and theatrical absurdity with Beat improvisation and performance art confrontation. Brossard's avalanche of language is outrageous. A kind of verbal delirium possesses the text, which on one level may be the collective fantasy lives of a countercultural group in Paris; on another, the psychotic outpourings of a woman named Decca Aldridge; on yet another, a script by impresario Socks Peelmunder for a guerrilla theater performance; and on the final level, the gamy underside of America's subconsciousa terrifying lava flow of provincial prejudices, racial fears, political paranoia, and sexist attitudes all speaking in tongues in a desperate attempt to bolt the door against the return of the repressed. Not since Naked Lunch has the American dream been assaulted with such ferocious verbal energy.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Confederation Poets were a group of Canadian English-language poets of the late nineteenth century whose work expressed the national consciousness inspired by the Confederation of 1867. Their transcendental and romantic praise of the Canadian landscape would go on to dominate Canadian poetry until the twentieth century. They were also called the Maple Tree School due to how their verses portrayed a touching love for the Canadian landscape. The term ‘Confederation Poets’ was coined by the Canadian professor and literary critic Malcolm Ross, who singled out four poets: Charles G. D. Roberts (1860–1943); Bliss Carman (1861–1929); Archibald Lampman (1861–1899); and Duncan Campbell Scott (1862–1947). They composed poems in a classic form, often on themes of love or philosophical speculation against the backdrop of nature; and they all reacted to Canada’s growing industrialisation, favouring a retreat to the as yet unspoiled wilderness. This comprehensive volume of the Delphi Poets Series presents the complete poetical works of the four principal members of the Confederation Poets, with numerous illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. BOOK EXCERPT:
Desire Mensah, a disgraced schoolteacher in her thirties, sees moving to sleepy little Cape Coast, Ghana, as her chance to get away from a shameful secret not buried deeply enough. And maybe, just maybe, she will find the love she craves and the husband her mother craves for her. But in Cape Coast, the past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past. That’s the kind of thing Wolfgang “Wolf” Ofori would say. Everyone says the eleven-year-old is a genius—eccentric though he is—and is bound to win Wonderkids, a quiz competition ordinarily for high school students. Wolf and Desire form a strange friendship, even as their mutual understanding both precipitates and reinforces the downfall of each. Before long, their struggles to exist in a world that dehumanizes and then throws the first stone whip up a perfect storm, with deadly consequences. Debut novelist Ayo Tamakloe-Garr drew inspiration from works such as A Streetcar Named Desire and Frankenstein to create The Wolf at Number 4, a story set in 1990s Ghana. The result is a chilling and funny gothic tale that will disarm readers even as it forces them to confront whether the wolves around us are born or made.
