This book explores the relationship between gender, religion and political action in Indonesia, examining the patterns of gender orders that have prevailed in recent history, and demonstrating the different forms of social power this has afforded to women. It sets out the part played by women in the nationalist movement, and the role of the women’s movement in the structuring of the independent Indonesian state, the politics of the immediate post-independence period and the transition to the authoritarian New Order. It analyses in detail the gender relations of the New Order regime, focused around the unitary family form supposed by the family system expounded in the New Order ideology and the contradictory implications of the opening up of the economy to foreign capital and ideas, for gender relations. It examines the forms of political activism that were possible for the women’s movement under the New Order, and the role it played in the fall of Suharto and the transition to democracy. The relationship between Islam and women in Indonesia is also addressed, with particular focus on the way in which Islam became a critical focus for political dissent in the late New Order period. Is meant to open our horizon that the issue of gender and social inclusion may be viewed from various disciplines and perspectives. This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 1st International Conference in Gender, Culture and Society, held online from Padang, Indonesia, August 30-31, 2021. The 85 revised full papers were carefully selected from 124 submissions. The papers are organized thematically in gender, culture and society. The papers present a wide range of insights and discussion about the current global perspectives on gender research.

The relationship between social movements and their countermovements is an underrepresented research topic, given the bulk of social movement studies that have been published to date. Moreover, empirical research on this topic primarily covers certain geographic areas of the world, specifically what is commonly called the “global North”. The mobilization of religious and women’s movements against social change, which strive for a preservation of the status quo and can be held responsible for a delayed expansion of reform-oriented interest articulation, is a rare topic of social movement literature, too. The authors of this volume address the issue of women’s movements and countermovements in countries of Southeast Asia and the North African part of the MENA region. They arrive at interesting constellations of coalition and competition between state and non-state actors, and religious and secular movements, as well as within women’s movements. Covering case studies from Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco and Tunisia, the pattern of Islamist movements countering the goals of (Muslim) women’s movements emerges as dominant.

Maskulinitas is a ground-breaking treatment of the representation of men and masculinity in Indonesian culture, from Suharto's New Order era to the present. The book includes critical analyses of Indonesian cultural expressions in literature, cinema, society, and politics. Drawing on the ideas of Bakhtin, Bourdieu, Maier, and others, author Marshall Clark explores, with acute insight and a critical eye, constructions of the masculine in contemporary Indonesian society. Maskulinitas also challenges the way scholars of Indonesia have held firm to the categories and frameworks of gender studies - a field still often equated with women's studies - while offering fascinating insights into representations and images of men as engendered and engendering subjects. As a timely addition to the generally conservative field of scholarship on gender in Southeast Asia, Maskulinitas demonstrates that gender studies need to encompass 'the man question, ' especially considering Indonesia's strongly patriarchal society, where the norms of feminine subordination and submission are legitimized by the ideologies of the state and the strictures of religion. Ultimately, this book challenges the reader with the notion that if the subordinate status of Indonesian women is to be highlighted and some sort of gender equality achieved, then the representations, subjectivities, and practices of Indonesian men must be addressed

This study investigates public and private representations of identities of Indonesian women in the New Order period (1967-1998) in the form of published autobiographies and unpublished diaries collected during fieldwork. During the New Order era, the government tried to indoctrinate conservative ideas about gender using various media. While autobiographies published in New Order Indonesia did not have the freedom to challenge the authoritative eye, those women who produced such works are still perceived as exerting their individuality and criticizing, however indirectly, the social conditions surrounding them. In the unpublished diaries considered, although the authors are more vocal in their dissension, nevertheless one discovers the reflection of patriarchal values in Indonesia.
