This books seeks to uncover the underlying message of the Gospel of John through its four major themes and several sub-themes. The major themes discussed are The Logos Prologue, The Book of Signs, The Book of Glory, and The Epilogue. The many sub-themes interspersed throughout the Gospel are The I am Sayings, Faith and Believing, Knowing and Unknowing, Light and Darkness, Seeing and Blindness, Ascent and Descent, Life and Death, Abiding and Discipleship, Bread and Water, Love, Two Extended Allegories, Judgment and the World, Son on Man-Son God, and Spirit, Paraclete, and Truth.

The Apostle John interwove many themes into the fabric of his gospel. Each one helps form the overall tapestry/message of the Gospel of John: ?that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name? (Jn. 20:31). This life is not just a theological concept, or a belief in the after-life. It is wrapped up from beginning to end in knowing God: ?Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent? (Jn. 17:3). This workbook examines nine of these major themes and three major discourses that are critical to understanding the message of the book?the message of life. These themes include: ? D. Moody Smith treats the theology of the Gospel of John in its narrative form and historical context, both ancient Jewish and early Christian. His work draws upon the most recent scholarly investigations of the Gospel's historical purpose and setting. The major theological themes of the Gospel, especially its christology, are treated in relation to the context of the work, since Johannine theology is not simply a by-product of controversies that produced the Gospel, but is rather related to them in significant ways. Part of the genius of the Gospel of John comes from how the author infuses the gospel message into every part of the Gospel. In The Gospel of John: A Thematic Approach, Jackson Painter investigates John's literary-theological strategy by identifying seven key themes and showing the reader how to detect them in any portion of the Gospel as well as how to see the themes interacting with one another to create John's distinct theological message about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The author gives numerous examples of the elements and motifs that comprise the themes and presents three studies that illustrate how the themes interact. Matthew describes the beginning of Jesus's ministry with the summary words, "μετανοεῖτε (repent/turn), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (3:2; 4:17). Why does Matthew use this command, μετανοεῖτε, at the beginning of his ministry, and how does it relate to the rest of the Gospel? What do μετανοέω and μετάνοια mean? Scholars have stated that μετανοέω in 4:17 has critical value for understanding Matthew because the verse functions as a summary statement (or key phrase) of Jesus's public ministry and teaching. This book argues the thematic significance of μετάνοια (turning/repentance) in the Gospel of Matthew. The lexical idea of μετανοέω and μετάνοια involves a turning of mind (or heart, will, thinking) and behavior, and so in turn of one's whole being and life. This opening commandment of turning (μετανοέω), especially the concept, the essence, and the contents is fully revealed throughout the body of Matthew in various ways. Discipleship, the language of righteousness, doing the will of God, changing one's heart and mind, the Great Commission, and Matthean soteriological theme convey the essence of μετάνοια and the contents of the fruit worthy of μετάνοια(3:2, 8; 4:17). The five major teaching blocks (5-7; 10; 13; 18; 23-25) teach the theme and the content of μετάνοια.

The essays in this volume, which span four decades, represent sustained reflection on the historical setting, narrative devices, and theology of the Gospel of John. Methodologically, the essays develop a narrative-critical approach to the Gospel, producing insights that have implications for historical and theological issues.
