Tricia and her brother, Shaun Morrissey, recovering from the tragic loss of their parents in an auto accident a couple of years earlier, undergo a period of turmoil in their previously placid lives in London. The turmoil is initiated by Tricia’s trip to the Himalayan mountain region in India, specifically to the mountain top temple of Kedarnath, at an elevation of 12,000 feet, where she suffered an event of memory lapse, possibly caused by inhalation of cannabis. Having returned to London and submitted herself to counseling by her psychotherapist, she is contacted by the newlyweds, Kris and Susan Hamsun, from Washington DC, claiming to know both—what caused the event and the way to emerge from it. Having convinced both Tricia and her skeptical brother, Shaun, as to the veracity of his claim, Kris, assisted by his Norwegian buddy, Jurgen, and other associates from his own treasure-hunting adventure, train and assist the duo in the successful recovery of the treasure. Post the successful task completion, Tricia is then advised to seek out the remaining 6 companions and similarly assist them in executing their treasure recovery task. While undertaking this transformation, Tricia makes her first contact with one companion, based on guidance received from the Dalai Lama and a Buddhist sage.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A timely study of change in a complex environment, Where There Are Mountains explores the relationship between human inhabitants of the southern Appalachians and their environment. Incorporating a wide variety of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, the study draws information from several viewpoints and spans more than four hundred years of geological, ecological, anthropological, and historical development in the Appalachian region. The book begins with a description of the indigenous Mississippian culture in 1500 and ends with the destructive effects of industrial logging and dam building during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Donald Edward Davis discusses the degradation of the southern Appalachians on a number of levels, from the general effects of settlement and industry to the extinction of the American chestnut due to blight and logging in the early 1900s. This portrait of environmental destruction is echoed by the human struggle to survive in one of our nation's poorest areas. The farming, livestock raising, dam building, and pearl and logging industries that have gradually destroyed this region have also been the livelihood of the Appalachian people. The author explores the sometimes conflicting needs of humans and nature in the mountains while presenting impressive and comprehensive research on the increasingly threatened environment of the southern Appalachians.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Memphis is built on land once the bottom of a sea, Nashville rests within a 600-foot-depth basin eroded from a mighty arch, Knoxville and Chattanooga nestle on lands that have migrates - Knoxville's underpinning traveling all the way from the middle of Sevier County. Our Restless Earth is written for all Tennesseans who are curios about the origins of familiar landscapes. Edward T. Luther describes a state that has attracted specialists from all over the world to study its fascinating geology, a state that in its long east-west axis encompasses nine distinct geologic regions. Appearing here are phenomena such as the New Madrid earthquake that formed Reelfoot lake, the state's almost forgotten gold rush, 60-foot reptiles that once inhabited parts of McNairy County, and the contrary Tennessee River that could not decide which way to flow. The origins of the state's oil, coal, iron, marble, and famous cave country - these too are a part of Our Restless Earth. Edward T. Luther is a native Tennessean whose professional career as a geologist and personal interest in writing have pointed him toward the preparation of this book. Since receiving his advanced degree in geology from Vanderbilt University in 1951, he has come to know that state intimately - first as a team member of the Tennessee Geological Survey and more recently as supervisor of the Survey's research program. He is also an avid reader of fiction and has long been interested in applying writing skills to his technical knowledge in order to make the fascinating science of the earth available to a wider audience.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Discovering family satisfies a curiosity. One learns of the challenges faced by ancestors, struggles endured, accomplishments shared, the good and sometimes the bad. In this writing, the author spent years researching, documenting and writing to absorb the wealth of Rhea family ancestors. The Rheas of what was Augusta County, Virginia, which later became Bath County and other counties, included in this writing descended from Robert, Archibald, and William Rhea who first settled in Augusta County in the mid-1700s and those of Margaret Rhea, a cousin to the brothers. These three Rhea brothers and Margaret are thought by researchers to be grandchildren of Matthew Campbell Rhea of Scotland and Ireland. And, so, the author’s story begins with him.
