Thinking In The Spirit

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is about the boisterous beginnings of the American Pentecostal movement and the ideas that defined that movement during those formative years. It follows a group of men who rethought the Christian faith in light of their new experience of God. Thinking in the Spirit aims to provide scholars and general readers who know little or nothing about Pentecostalism with an introduction to the ideas of the movement's most articulate early spokespersons, and to provide Pentecostals with a non-judgmental historical source to help them in their theological reflections. Douglas Jacobsen focuses on the individuals who formed the original brain trust of this now gigantic religious movement. In a 25-year burst of creative energy at the beginning of the 20th century, these leaders articulated almost all the basic theological ideas that continue to define the Pentecostal message in the United States and around the world.

The Thinking Spirit

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection of texts, in presenting Rudolf Steiner's highly evolved understanding of the nature of thinking, points the direction to take today to carry on with the work of Goethe, of Coleridge and of Emerson as the three principal spokesmen for Romantic Imagination in 19th century Europe and America. Their Romantic epoch came to an end, because the creative thought that served that epoch could not fully satisfy the requirements of thinking or the further necessity of theory that properly characterize our own age. But Romantic tradition continues, with the full theory and culture of thinking that Rudolf Steiner elaborated, who should satisfy our sense of what we need to support a recovery of the Imagination in our own time. As Steiner put it-we need today to: "provide knowing with a firm basis through the fact that the world of ideas, in its essential being, is seen connected with nature, in order then, within the world of ideas thus consolidated, to advance to an experience beyond the sense world."

Two Dimensional Thinking

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The plague of one-dimensional thinking is responsible for more unnecessary divisions, more useless doctrinal arguments, and more dangerous discrediting of inspired scriptures among God’s people than any other factor. The cure is to start thinking two-dimensionally. In this treatise, Paul Kasch challenges believers to consider matters from God’s perspective – and by so doing, attempt to unite us under the core values of our faith, better equipping us for our service and daily struggles while sojourning in this hostile environment. We have enough tribulation without fighting each other. Because linearly-arranged time here in the physical dimension has proven to be an unstable element affected by matter and gravity, we cannot assume time works the same way, or is even a component of, the spiritual dimension. Grasping this concept will help us reconcile conflicts such as free will & predestination. It then becomes a fun endeavor to explore the ways the spiritual dimension crosses over and interacts with the physical, and how we will eventually become beings with multi-dimensional capabilities. Paul Kasch’s latest work will fan the flames of grace in your heart while refusing to compromise scriptural truth. You’ll come away from this book with a broader perspective on eternity and a desire to bolster your own spiritual development.

Thinking Through Kierkegaard

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Thinking through Kierkegaard is a critical evaluation of Søren Kierkegaard's vision of the normatively human, of who we are and might aspire to become, and of what Mehl calls our existential identity. Through a pragmatist examination of three of Kierkegaard's key pseudonymous "voices" (Judge William, Climacus, and Anti-Climacus), Peter J. Mehl argues that Kierkegaard's path is not the only end of our search, but instead leads us to affirm a plurality of paths toward a fulfilling existential identity. Contrary to Kierkegaard's ideal of moral personhood and orthodox Christian identity, Mehl aims to acknowledge the possibility of pluralism in existential identities. By demanding sensitivity to the deep ways social and cultural context influences human perception, interpretation and self?representation, Mehl argues that Kierkegaard is not simply discovering but also participating in a cultural construction of the human being. Drawing on accounts of what it is to be a person by prominent philosophers outside of Kierkegaard scholarship, including Charles Taylor, Owen Flanagan, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Thomas Nagel, Mehl also works to bridge the analytic and continental traditions and reestablishes Kierkegaard as a rich resource for situating moral and spiritual identity. This reexamination of Kierkegaard is recommended for anyone interested in what it means to be a person.
