BOOK EXCERPT:

The manual is standard practice from Tivo to tent pitching, yet blatantly omitted when we give birth and arrive on Earth. We are here now with no manual, swimming in a sea of peripheral information, our most basic and primordial questions left unanswered. Who are we? Why are we here? Just as we use a guidebook when visiting a new country for the first time, so too do we value a guidebook during our stay on Earth. The Book of Life Questions & Answers takes us under its wing on an inspiring, compelling behind-the-scenes tour of our world into the depths of our consciousness, navigating the mentality creating the various arenas of our society. By tying together the threads comprising these sectors in a way we can all understand, we begin to make sense of why we relate to each other as we do, why friction persists at the cost of global peace, and grasp solutions along our journey through the book. The shrouded, seemingly complex reasoning driving our human actions is finally untangled and quite beautifully unraveled. The curtains are swept back to plainly reveal how we have unconsciously created the framework of society as we know it today.

BOOK EXCERPT:

A bundle of two ebooks by recovery expert Dr. Allen Berger to help you avoid pitfalls and be proactive in your recovery journey. 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery contains concise advice on hunting down the personal culprits that sabotage sobriety and personal happiness. To grow in recovery, we must grow up emotionally. This means getting honest with ourselves and facing up to the self-defeating thoughts and actions that put our sobriety at risk. Although there are as many ways to mess up recovery as there are alcoholics and addicts, some general themes exist, which include: confusing self-concern with selfishness; not making amends; using the program to try to become perfect; not getting help for relationship troubles; and believing that life should be easy. In simple, down-to-earth language, Allen Berger explores the twelve most commonly confronted beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage recovery. He then provides tools for working through these problems in daily life. 12 Smart Things to Do When the Booze and Drugs Are Gone offers a fresh list of "smart" things to do to attain and sustain emotional sobriety. Whether it's called "dry drunk" or "white knuckle sobriety," it's that stage in recovery when we realize that "putting the plug in the jug" isn't enough. The next step is taking responsibility for the emotional immaturity that fuels our addictive personality and has a tremendous impact on ourselves and others. These smart things include: understanding who you are and what's important to you; learning not to take others' reactions personally; trusting your inner compass; and taking responsibility for your reactions to problematic situations.

Job Loss Identity And Mental Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Our jobs are often a big part of our identities, and when we are fired, we can feel confused, hurt, and powerless—at sea in terms of who we are. Drawing on extensive, real-life interviews, Job Loss, Identity, and Mental Health shines a light on the experiences of unemployed, middle-class professional men and women, showing how job loss can affect both identity and mental health. Sociologist Dawn R. Norris uses in-depth interviews to offer insight into the experience of losing a job—what it means for daily life, how the unemployed feel about it, and the process they go through as they try to deal with job loss and their new identities as unemployed people. Norris highlights several specific challenges to identity that can occur. For instance, the way other people interact with the unemployed either helps them feel sure about who they are, or leads them to question their identities. Another identity threat happens when the unemployed no longer feel they are the same person they used to be. Norris also examines the importance of the subjective meaning people give to statuses, along with the strong influence of society’s expectations. For example, men in Norris’s study often used the stereotype of the “male breadwinner” to define who they were. Job Loss, Identity, and Mental Health describes various strategies to cope with identity loss, including “shifting” away from a work-related identity and instead emphasizing a nonwork identity (such as “a parent”), or conversely “sustaining” a work-related identity even though he or she is actually unemployed. Finally, Norris explores the social factors—often out of the control of unemployed people—that make these strategies possible or impossible. A compelling portrait of a little-studied aspect of the Great Recession, Job Loss, Identity, and Mental Health is filled with insight into the identity crises that unemployment can trigger, as well as strategies to help the unemployed maintain their mental strength.
