BOOK EXCERPT:
Algebraic geometry and geometric modeling both deal with curves and surfaces generated by polynomial equations. Algebraic geometry investigates the theoretical properties of polynomial curves and surfaces; geometric modeling uses polynomial, piecewise polynomial, and rational curves and surfaces to build computer models of mechanical components and assemblies for industrial design and manufacture. The NSF sponsored the four-day ''Vilnius Workshop on Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling'', which brought together some of the top experts in the two research communities to examine a wide range of topics of interest to both fields. This volume is an outgrowth of that workshop. Included are surveys, tutorials, and research papers. In addition, the editors have included a translation of Minding's 1841 paper, ''On the determination of the degree of an equations obtained by elimination'', which foreshadows the modern application of mixed volumes in algebraic geometry. The volume is suitable for mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers interested in applications of algebraic geometry to geometric modeling.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book spans the distance between algebraic descriptions of geometric objects and the rendering of digital geometric shapes based on algebraic models. These contrasting points of view inspire a thorough analysis of the key challenges and how they are met. The articles focus on important classes of problems: implicitization, classification, and intersection. Combining illustrative graphics, computations and review articles this book helps the reader gain a firm practical grasp of these subjects.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry, though closely related, are traditionally represented by two almost disjoint scientific communities. Both fields deal with objects defined by algebraic equations, but the objects are studied in different ways. In 12 chapters written by leading experts, this book presents recent results which rely on the interaction of both fields. Some of these results have been obtained from a major European project in geometric modeling.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Since the pioneering works of Novikov and Maltsev, group theory has been a testing ground for mathematical logic in its many manifestations, from the theory of algorithms to model theory. The interaction between logic and group theory led to many prominent results which enriched both disciplines. This volume reflects the major themes of the American Mathematical Society/Association for Symbolic Logic Joint Special Session (Baltimore, MD), Interactions between Logic, Group Theory and Computer Science. Included are papers devoted to the development of techniques used for the interaction of group theory and logic. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in algorithmic and combinatorial group theory. A complement to this work is Volume 349 in the AMS series, Contemporary Mathematics, Computational and Experimental Group Theory, which arose from the same meeting and concentrates on the interaction of group theory and computer science.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume grew out of two ergodic theory workshops held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These events gave young researchers an introduction to active research areas and promoted interaction between young and established mathematicians. Included are research and survey articles devoted to various topics in ergodic theory. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in these and related areas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Lively discussions and stimulating research were part of a five-day conference on Mathematical Methods in Nonlinear Wave Propagation sponsored by the NSF and CBMS. This volume is a collection of lectures and papers stemming from that event. Leading experts present dynamical systems and chaos, scattering and spectral theory, nonlinear wave equations, optimal control, optical waveguide design, and numerical simulation. The book is suitable for a diverse audience of mathematical specialists interested in fiber optic communications and other nonlinear phenomena. It is also suitable for engineers and other scientists interested in the mathematics of nonlinear wave propagation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Comprised of papers from the IIIrd Prairie Analysis Seminar held at Kansas State University, this book reflects the many directions of current research in harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. Included is the work of the distinguished main speaker, Tadeusz Iwaniec, his invited guests John Lewis and Juan Manfredi, and many other leading researchers. The main topic is the so-called p-harmonic equation, which is a family of nonlinear partial differential equations generalizing the usual Laplace equation. This study of p-harmonic equations touches upon many areas of analysis with deep relations to functional analysis, potential theory, and calculus of variations. The material is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in harmonic analysis and partial differential equations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
John von Neumann and Marshall Stone were two giants of Twentieth Century mathematics. In honor of the 100th anniversary of their births, a mathematical celebration was organized featuring developments in fields where both men were major influences. This volume contains articles from the AMS Special Session, Operator Algebras, Quantization and Noncommutative Geometry: A Centennial Celebration in Honor of John von Neumann and Marshall H. Stone. Papers range from expository and refereed and cover a broad range of mathematical topics reflecting the fundamental ideas of von Neumann and Stone. Most contributions are expanded versions of the talks and were written exclusively for this volume. Included, among Also featured is a reprint of P.R. Halmos's The Legend of John von Neumann. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in operator algebras and applications, including noncommutative geometry.
