This is the first volume of a collection of original and review articles on recent advances and new directions in a multifaceted and interconnected area of mathematics and its applications. It encompasses many topics in theoretical developments in operator theory and its diverse applications in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and other disciplines. The purpose is to bring in one volume many important original results of cutting edge research as well as authoritative review of recent achievements, challenges, and future directions in the area of operator theory and its applications.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on app1ications of linear operator theory to systems and networks, which was held at the Weizmann Institute of Science in the third week of June, 19S3, just be fore the MTNS Conference in Beersheva. For a 10ng time these subjects were studied indepen dent1y by mathematica1 ana1ysts and e1ectrica1 engineers. Never the1ess, in spite of the lack of communication, these two groups often deve10ped parallel theories, though in different languages, at different levels of genera1ity and typica11y quite different motivations. In the last severa1 years each side has become aware of the work of the other and there is a seeming1y ever increasing invo1vement of the abstract theories of factorization, extension and interpolation of operators (and operator/matrix va1ued functions) to the design and analysis of systems and net works. Moreover, the problems encountered in e1ectrica1 engineering have genera ted new mathematica1 problems, new approaches, and usefu1 new formu1ations. The papers contained in this volume constitute a more than representative se1ection of the presented talks and dis cussion at the workshop, and hopefu11y will also serve to give a reasonably accurate picture of the problems which are under active study today and the techniques which are used to deal with them."

These 35 refereed articles report on recent and original results in various areas of operator theory and connected fields, many of them strongly related to contributions of Sz.-Nagy. The scientific part of the book is preceeded by fifty pages of biographical material, including several photos.

This book contains the lecture notes as well as some invited papers presented at the Third Winter School in Complex Analysis, Operator Theory and Applications held February 2-5, 2010, in Valencia, Spain. Sevilla-Peris; Holomorphic self-maps of the disk intertwining two linear fractional maps, by M.D. Contreras, S. Diaz-Madrigal, M.J. Martin, and D. Vukotic; ABC-type estimates via Garsia-type norms, by K.M. Dyakonov; and Volterra type operators on Bergman spaces with exponential weights, by J. Pau and J.A. Pelaez. The topics selected for the mini-courses cover several aspects of complex analysis and operator theory that play important roles in understanding connections between different areas that are considered in fashion these days. This part is aimed at graduate students and young researchers. The courses are self-contained, focusing on those aspects that are basic and that can lead the readers to a quick understanding of the theories presented in each topic. They start with the classical results and reach a selection of open problems in each case. The research and survey articles are aimed at young researchers in the area, as well as post-doc and senior researchers interested in complex analysis and operator theory. This book is published in cooperation with Real Sociedad Matematica Espanola.

This volume presents a set of papers based on the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Multisensor Fusion for Computer Vision, held in Grenoble, France, in June 1989. The workshop focused on the fusion or integration of sensor information to achieve the optimum interpretation of a scene. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including principles and issues in multisensor fusion, information fusion for navigation, multisensor fusion for object recognition, network approaches to multisensor fusion, computer architectures for multisensor fusion, and applications of multisensor fusion. The authors have documented their own research and, in so doing,have presented the state of the art in the field. Each author is a recognized leader in his or her area in the academic, governmental, or industrial research community. Several contributors present novel points of view on the integration of information. The book gives a representative picture of current progress in multisensor fusion for computer vision among the leading research groups in Europe and North America.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Israel Gohberg (1928–2009) – one of the great mathematicians of our time – who inspired innumerable fellow mathematicians and directed many students. The volume reflects the wide spectrum of Gohberg’s mathematical interests. It consists of more than 25 invited and peer-reviewed original research papers written by his former students, co-authors and friends. Included are contributions to single and multivariable operator theory, commutative and non-commutative Banach algebra theory, the theory of matrix polynomials and analytic vector-valued functions, several variable complex function theory, and the theory of structured matrices and operators. Also treated are canonical differential systems, interpolation, completion and extension problems, numerical linear algebra and mathematical systems theory.

This book contains a selection of carefully refereed research papers, most of which were presented at the fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA), held at Cagliari, Italy, from June 24-27, 2003. The papers, many of which have been written by leading experts in the field, concern a wide variety of topics in modern operator theory and applications, with emphasis on differential operators and numerical methods. The book will be of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians and engineers.

This book features a collection of up-to-date research papers that study various aspects of general operator algebra theory and concrete classes of operators, including a range of applications. Most of the papers included were presented at the International Workshop on Operator Algebras, Toeplitz Operators, and Related Topics, in Boca del Rio, Veracruz, Mexico, in November 2018. The conference, which was attended by more than 30 leading experts in the field, was held in celebration of Nikolai Vasilevski’s 70th birthday, and the contributions are dedicated to him.
