BOOK EXCERPT:
One single air-drop can change your entire world. I'm tired of being surrounded by happy couples. Don’t get me wrong, I'm happy for my friends, but I'm tired of being alone. When a mistaken identity has me accepting an air-drop from a complete stranger, I begin to wonder if my days alone are coming to an end. I’m getting bored following this band across the country. I'm not here for the music. I'm here to spend time with my sister. When another name pops up on my air-drop list, I decide to take a chance. I didn’t expect him to respond. I didn’t expect him to want to meet me, but there’s no going back now. Tropes: Rock star, meet cute, mistaken identity

BOOK EXCERPT:
This collection uncovers connections and coincidences that challenge the old stories of pioneering performers who crossed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. It investigates songlines, drama, opera, music theatre, dance, and circus—removing traditional boundaries that separate studies of performance, and celebrating difference and transformation in style, intention, and delivery. Well known, or obscure, travelling performers faced dangers at sea and hazardous journeys across land. Their tracks, made in pursuit of fortune and fame, intersected with those made by earlier storytellers in search for food. Touring Performance and Global Exchange takes a fresh look at such tracks—the material remains—demonstrating that moving performance does far more than transfer repertoires and people; it transforms them. Touring performance has too often beenconceived in diasporic terms, as a fixed product radiating out from a cultural centre. This collection maps different patterns—ones that comprise reversed flows, cross currents, and continually proliferating centres of meaning in complex networks of global exchange. This collection will be of great interest to scholars and students in theatre, music, drama studies, and cultural history.

BOOK EXCERPT:
“A delicate, layered exploration of family, trauma, and memory . . . An intriguing introduction to a significant voice in contemporary Japanese fiction.” —Kirkus Reviews Two tales about memory, loss and love, both told with stylistic inventiveness and breath-taking sensitivity. Taichi was forced to stop working almost a decade ago and since then he and his wife Natsuko have been getting by on her wages. But Natsuko is a woman accustomed to hardship. When her own family’s fortune dried up years during her childhood, she lived a surreal hand-to-mouth existence shaped by her mother’s refusal to accept her family’s new station in life. When Natsuko sees an ad for a spa and recognizes the place as the former luxury hotel where she spent time as a child, she decides to take her sick husband, despite the cost. But the overnight visit triggers hard but ultimately redemptive memories relating to the complicated history of her family. Modelled on a classic story by Junichiro Tanizaki, Ninety-Nine Kisses is the second story in this book and it portrays in touching and lyrical fashion the lives of the four unmarried sisters in a historical, close-knit neighbourhood of contemporary Tokyo. “Magical.” —The Guardian, Most Anticipated Fiction of 2021 “An ethereal novel combining two tales exploring memory, love, and loss.” —Vogue (UK) “Kashimada’s writing is exceptional.” —The Spectator “While Kashimada’s stories, like Murakami’s, resist easy interpretation, the former revel in the beauty of experience, whether sorrowful or joyous, affirming life in all its strangeness, horror and mystery.” —The Times Literary Supplement (UK) “Only Kashimada can create this kind of world.” —Yoko Ogawa, author of The Memory Police

BOOK EXCERPT:
Introduction to Celebrity Protection and Touring offers a peek behind the scenes of the close protection industry, more commonly known as the bodyguard business. More than the stereotypical “bullet blocker,” the modern protection specialist is a skilled practitioner who utilizes verbal judo much more than its physical counterpart. This book, written by industry experts, Elijah Shaw and Dale June, also narrows the focus, centering in on an exciting, but misunderstood, sector that involves working with celebrities ranging from actors to musicians and entering into their world of touring, filming and promotional appearances. While many may think that celebrity protection is “one size fits all,” nothing could be further from the truth, as you are not only dealing with the protection of the client, but the client’s reputation. All this with the added pressure of the entire world looking over your shoulder, just waiting for a misstep. With real-world advice, tactics and techniques on how to identify and defeat potential attackers, as well as covering everything from dealing with overzealous fans, to hyper-aggressive paparazzi, this book offers proven solutions from two experts that have covered the gambit from the Grammy Awards to the White House.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Aviation extended the horizon of international touring across Asia and the Pacific in the 1950s and 1960s. Nightclubs in Hong Kong, Manila, Melbourne, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Taipei presented an international array of touring acts. This book investigates how this happened. It explores the post-war formation of the Asia Pacific region through international touring and the transformation of entertainment during the ‘jet age’ of aviation. Drawing on archival research across the region, Bollen investigates how touring variety forged new relations between artists, audiences, and nations. Mapping tours and tracing networks by connecting fragments, he reveals how versatile artists translated repertoire in circulation as they toured, and how entrepreneurial endeavours harnessed the production of national distinction to government agendas. He argues that touring variety on commercial circuits diversified the repertoire in regional circulation, anticipating the diversity emerging in state-sanctioned multiculturalisms, and driving the government-construction of national theatres for cultural diplomacy.
