Gone are the days when teachers used to be in the centre of education but now the focus is on the students. Now; teachers cannot carry out punishments and act with extreme strictness. Today; there is no co-relation between age and knowledge. With the explosion of facts and information nobody can claim that by virtue of age or by the mere fact that they were born earlier; they know more. Now; the things will move with courtesy and humbleness. The present teacher cannot be student’s father. He should prepare himself to play the role of an elder brother/sister or of a friend who will facilitate and encourage the child. Over the years, the Boards of Secondary Education have undergone a process of functional change from being examination Boards to Secondary Education Boards and finally to Boards of School Education. This has resulted in many modifications in the working of the Boards. Even then, the Boards are facing many challenges. The main challenge before the Boards are that there is a constant threat of knowledge getting obsolete day by day, on the other the requirement for updating the existing facilities remains a financial challenge. The Boards need to widen the sphere of their operations and increasingly support schools in undertaking innovative activities and in offering high quality education. What does it mean for education to be a fundamental right, and how may children benefit from it? Surprisingly, even when the right to education was added to the Indian Constitution as Article 21A, this question barely received any attention. The book identifies justiciability—or, more broadly, enforceability—as the most important feature of Article 21A, meaning that children and their parents must be provided with means to effectively claim their right from the State; otherwise, it would remain a ‘right’ only on paper. The book highlights how lack of access to the Indian judiciary means that the constitutional promise of justiciability remains unfulfilled.
