The LNCS journal Transactions on Rough Sets is devoted to the entire spectrum of rough sets related issues, from logical and mathematical foundations, through all aspects of rough set theory and its applications, such as data mining, knowledge discovery, and intelligent information processing, to relations between rough sets and other approaches to uncertainty, vagueness, and incompleteness, such as fuzzy sets and theory of evidence. Volume XIII contains 14 papers which introduce a number of new advances in both the foundations and the applications of rough sets. These are mathematical structures of generalized rough sets in infinite universes, approximations of arbitrary binary relations, and attribute reduction in decision-theoretic rough sets. Methodological advances introduce rough set-based and hybrid methodologies for learning theory, attribution reduction, decision analysis, risk assessment, and data mining tasks such as classification and clustering. In addition, this volume contains regular articles on mining temporal software metrics data, C-GAME discretization method, perceptual tolerance intersection as an example of a near set operation and compression of spatial data with quadtree structures.

This book constitutes the refereed conference proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining and Granular Computing, RSFDGrC 2015, held in Tianjin, China in November 2015 as one of the co-located conference of the 2015 Joint Rough Set Symposium, JRS 2015. The 44 papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 97 submissions. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Rough Sets and Knowledge Technology, RSKT 2013, held in Halifax, Canada in October 2013 as one of the co-located conferences of the 2013 Joint Rough Set Symposium, JRS 2013. The 69 papers (including 44 regular and 25 short papers) included in the JRS proceedings (LNCS 8170 and LNCS 8171) were carefully reviewed and selected from 106 submissions. The papers in this volume cover topics such as history and future of rough sets; foundations and probabilistic rough sets; rules, reducts, ensembles; new trends in computing; three-way decision rough sets; and learning, predicting, modeling.

This book demonstrates an original concept for implementing the rough set theory in the construction of decision-making systems. It addresses three types of decisions, including those in which the information or input data is insufficient. Though decision-making and classification in cases with missing or inaccurate data is a common task, classical decision-making systems are not naturally adapted to it. One solution is to apply the rough set theory proposed by Prof. Pawlak. The proposed classifiers are applied and tested in two configurations: The first is an iterative mode in which a single classification system requests completion of the input data until an unequivocal decision (classification) is obtained. It allows us to start classification processes using very limited input data and supplementing it only as needed, which limits the cost of obtaining data. The second configuration is an ensemble mode in which several rough set-based classification systems achieve the unequivocal decision collectively, even though the systems cannot separately deliver such results.

It opens with a commemorative article that gives a brief coverage of Pawlak's works in rough set theory, molecular computing, philosophy, painting and poetry. Fifteen papers explore the theory of rough sets in various domains as well as new applications of rough sets. In addition, this volume of the TRS includes a complete monograph on rough sets and approximate Boolean reasoning systems that includes both the foundations as well as applications of data mining.

This special book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Zdzisław Pawlak, the father of rough set theory, in order to commemorate both the 10th anniversary of his passing and 35 years of rough set theory. The book consists of 20 chapters distributed into four sections, which focus in turn on a historical review of Professor Zdzisław Pawlak and rough set theory; a review of the theory of rough sets; the state of the art of rough set theory; and major developments in rough set based data mining approaches.
