In an increasingly globalized world, mobility is a new defining feature of our lives, livelihoods and work experiences. This book is a first in utilising transnational migration studies as a new theoretical framework in management and organization studies. Ozkazanc-Pan presents a much-needed new concept for understanding people, work and organizations in a world on the move while attending to growing inequality associated with work in changing societies.

As the globalisation of migration intensifies, many countries have joined the international competition for the most talented, skilful, and resourceful workers. More recently, migration has shifted from international to transnational, characterised by its multiple and circular flows across transnational spaces rather than singular or unidirectional movement. This book examines the vulnerability caused by migration, in particular, the vulnerability of women that may cause forced migration, and the ways in which this is dealt with by national authorities in affluent European states. It explores transnational migration, gender and human rights, migration regimes, and anti-trafficking efforts in Norway.

This book explores the migration processes and experiences of female labour migrants from Indonesia to Malaysia’s manufacturing sector. Their stories depict labour migration as a process shaped by the intersection of external, structural forces and individual desires and motivations. Labour migration was valued and evaluated as an “investment”, one that was calculated not only in terms of financial security but also in relation to personal rewards and experiences unavailable to them at home. These labour migrants negotiated a number of externally imposed demands and conditions, ranging from migration regulations, the challenges of settlement in a new city, factory floor relations, and the negative stereotypes attached to female Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia. Such constraints did not simply result in their sense of victimisation, as the interviews revealed the women’s capacity to resist, negotiate and comply with such factors. The book distinguishes between two groups of migrants: inexperienced, first-time migrants and experienced repeat migrants.

Decolonising Lifelong Learning in the Age of Transnational Migration examines how colonialism has shaped migration and migrants’ transnational learning experiences. With the development of modern transportation and advanced communication technologies, migration has shifted from international to transnational, characterised by the multiple and circular migration across transnational spaces of migrants who maintain close contact with their country of origin. The book interrogates the colonial assumptions and Eurocentric tendencies influencing the current ideological moorings of lifelong learning theories, policies, and practices in the age of transnational migration. It calls for an approach to lifelong learning that aims to decolonise the ideological underpinnings of colonial relations of rule, especially in terms of its racialised privileging of ‘whiteness’ and Eurocentrism as normative processes of knowledge accumulation. Drawing on a wide range of perspectives from media and communications, sociology, cultural studies and anthropology, this volume provides an empirically grounded and theoretically insightful investigation into the mediated identies of women in the East Asian diaspora.

Most studies on transnational migration either stress assimilation, circulatory migration, or the negative impact of migration. This remarkable study, which covers migrants from one Jordanian village to 17 different countries in Europe, Asia, and North America, emphasizes the resiliency of transnational migrants after long periods of absence, social encapsulation, and stress, and their ability to construct social networks and reinterpret traditions in such a way as to mix the old and the new in a scenario that incorporates both worlds. Focusing on the humanistic aspects of the migration experience, this book examines questions such as birth control, women’s work, retention of tribal law, and the changing attitudes of migrants towards themselves, their families, their home communities, and their nation. It ends with placing transnational migration from Jordan in a cross-cultural perspective by comparing it with similar processes elsewhere, and critically reviews a number of theoretical perspectives that have been used to explain migration.
