Drug use disorders are frequently associated with mental disorders. Data has shown that over half of the individuals who have a lifetime diagnosis of a drug use disorder also have a lifetime diagnosis of a mental disorder. This report, based on the papers from a technical review of the subject, presents examples of research being done in this important area, & helps define the need for further research. Included in the topics are specific areas of research & treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, cigarette smoking, & severe mental illness. Particular focus is given to the additional problem of HIV in the context of comorbid disorders.
