Swamp Monsters

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Delivering juicy details with unrelenting speed and force” (Jonathan Allen), Swamp Monsters is the wild inside story of how Donald Trump made a star of Ron DeSantis and then set out to destroy him—a struggle for supremacy that has turned Florida into the crucible of the new GOP and of America's future—by “one of the keenest and best-sourced observers of Florida’s political maelstrom” (Rick Wilson). Ron DeSantis was struggling through Florida’s political wilderness when, in late 2017, Donald Trump extended his hand. Ambitious but charmless, DeSantis was a relatively obscure figure even within his own state’s Republican party, and an unlikely pick for the GOP’s gubernatorial nomination. But when Trump took to Twitter and praised him as “a brilliant young leader” and “a true FIGHTER,” everything changed—for DeSantis, for Florida, and for the country. Today, as Florida governor and a GOP presidential frontrunner, DeSantis sits within striking distance of the Oval Office, and his onetime benefactor has turned into his most formidable opponent. Florida, meanwhile, has mutated from the country’s biggest swing state into the stronghold of the extremist wing of the Republican party—a place where COVID denialism and culture-war antics have been battle-tested, and where the nation’s political future might just be forged. In Swamp Monsters, veteran Florida journalist and NBC News senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon pulls back the curtain on the titanic clash between a one-time kingmaker and a would-be king, showing how the battle between Trump and DeSantis has escalated, how it might end—and what it will mean for the country.

Social Media Freedom Of Speech And The Future Of Our Democracy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A broad explanation of the various dimensions of the problem of bad speech on the internet within the American context. One of the most fiercely debated issues of this era is what to do about bad speech-hate speech, disinformation and propaganda campaigns, and incitement of violence-on the internet, and in particular speech on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. In Social Media, Freedom of Speech, and the Future of our Democracy, Lee C. Bollinger and Geoffrey R. Stone have gathered an eminent cast of contributors--including Hillary Clinton, Amy Klobuchar, Sheldon Whitehouse, Mark Warner, Newt Minow, Tim Wu, Cass Sunstein, Jack Balkin, Emily Bazelon, and others--to explore the various dimensions of this problem in the American context. They stress how difficult it is to develop remedies given that some of these forms of bad speech are ordinarily protected by the First Amendment. Bollinger and Stone argue that it is important to remember that the last time we encountered major new communications technology-television and radio-we established a federal agency to provide oversight and to issue regulations to protect and promote the public interest. Featuring a variety of perspectives from some of America's leading experts on this hotly contested issue, this volume offers new insights for the future of free speech in the social media era.

Donald J Trump And The Politics Of Mass Society

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Donald J. Trump and the Politics of Mass Society, Albert P. Melone studies Trump’s behavioral patterns in the fourth year of his presidential term and the three tumultuous years leading to the 2024 presidential election. Melone analyzes the leading explanatory paradigm of American government and politics by utilizing the democratic and aristocratic criticisms of mass society theory to better describe and explain the behavior of Donald Trump and his followers. The initial chapters outline the theoretical framework, the mass movement characteristics, and its membership’s cult-like behavior. Two significant events of the last year of Trump’s administration— the pandemic and the politics surrounding the Black Lives Matter demonstrations— illustrate Trump’s leadership style and the behavioral patterns of the MAGA mass movement. The 2020 election and the attempt to reverse its outcome is a central topic throughout the text, including a discussion of Trump’s second impeachment, the efforts of the House Select Committee on January 6th, voter reactions in the 2022 midterm elections, and the various political and legal attempts to make Trump accountable for his role in the so-called insurrection at the nation’s Capitol. In the final chapter, Melone critically analyzes alternative prescriptions to right the ship of state with a steely eye focused on the realities and possibilities to salvage the democratic republic from an autocratic future.

The Greatest Man In Our Time

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Modern pundits give Donald Trump little credit for anything even though he is clearly The Greatest Man in Our Time. I would say it is because the bulk of the news media simply do not like him as he does not want to have anything to do with a Marxist agenda. Before Trump set the world on fire from 2017 to 2020, the five highest rated presidents, according to a C-SPAN survey, for example were Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower. I do not contest the fact that they showed greatness in office but when you look at all of Trump’s accomplishments and the complexity of our times, the 45th president deserves much more consideration. That’s why I wrote this book. You may never choose to invite Donald John Trump over the house for breakfast or even a holiday gathering, but looking back at his four years in office, whether you like him or not, most Americans admit those were some of the most prosperous and warless years we have had in our lifetimes. We have the chance again to have the Greatest Man in Our Time as President in a few more years. Let’s do our best to assure it. . After you read this book, I hope you feel as comfortable as I do to place Donald J. Trump on the top of this venerable stack of great presidents. With all of the flack Trump received as president, there are clearly a number of Americans who would not cast their vote for Best President his way under any circumstance. But there are a lot who would. I am glad you are reading this book as it will help you know what a great man and a great president we can have again as our leader.
