More than ten years have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Tumors and Tumorlike Lesions of Bone and Joints in 1981. During this period significant progress has been made in diagnosis, and particularly in staging and treatment of bone tumors. In most centers, limb-sparing surgery has replaced the more radical ablative surgery, with or without preoperative chemotherapy. This became possible due to the introduction and increased application of newer high-quality imaging techniques (CT and MRI) and in particular the use of new cytomorphologic methods of diagnosis, especially immunohisto chemistry. These advances in diagnosis and treatment have been reflected by the publication of new editions of several important text books, since their authors - pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists - felt the necessity of updating their works in recent years. However, in these publications different criteria of classification were adopted. The number of cases compiled at the Latin American Registry of Bone Pathology increased from 4913 primary bone tumors and more than 1100 tumorlike lesions at the time of publication of the first edition of this book, to 5274 bone tumors and 1665 tumorlike lesions by the end of December 1985, when I finished my work as head of the Registry and occupied the positions of Professor of Orthopedic Pathology at St. Louis University Medical Center and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.

Detection and characterization of bone tumors with imaging remains a big challenge for every radiologist notwithstanding the impressive progress achieved by the introduction of several new imaging modalities. Moreover, new concepts in surgical and oncological treatment of these lesions require from the radiologist appropriate and focused answers to the specifc questions asked by the referring physicians in order to choose the best therapeutic approach for the in- vidual patient. This book reflects the experience of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute during more than 100 years of treatment of musculoskeletal tumor and tumorlike lesions. It presents a wide range of lesions from a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting pertinent clinical, radiological, and histological correlations. Treatment is briefly reported for each entity. In addition, the more recent biomolecular findings of use for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are carefully analyzed. The Rizzoli case archive spans more than a century, the first treated case dating back to 28 September 1900, and contains the original material – clinical charts, imaging, paraffin blocks, and histological slides – of more than 40,000 cases, including about 29,000 bone lesions and 11,000 soft tissue lesions. This book reports the most relevant entities and reflects the improvements in knowledge of musculoskeletal tumors as presented during the yearly international course held at the Rizzoli Institute.​

In the past 50 years considerable progress has been made in orthopedics and traumatology. One of the principal reasons for these advances has undoubtedly been the separation of these specialties from general surgery. Alongside this development the number of those devoted to the study and treatment of locomotor disabilities, who could formerly be counted on the fingers of one hand-at least in our country-has multiplied by thousands and even more have subspecialized. This accelerated growth has encouraged the sharpen ing of diagnostic skills, technical improvement, and the application of advances in other fields of medicine to orthopedics. However, paradoxically enough, one of the most important aspects of orthopedics, bone pathology, has not attracted enough specialists worldwide to handle the complex problems, encountered daily, that only an expert and experienced pathologist is capable of resolving. Within the modern milieu, the personality and accomplishments of Professor Fritz Schajowicz stand out distinctly. Dr. Schajowicz, of Austrian origin, studied with Pro fessor J. Erdheim of Vienna. Having afterwards been granted a fellowship to extend his knowledge of bone pathology at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute of Bologna under the direction of Professor Vittorio Putti, he complemented this work with the study of clinical orthopedics at that prestigious institution. In 1938, Professor Jose Valls visited the Rizzoli Institute and, recognizing the outstanding training of Professor Schajowicz, invited him to move to Argentina where we were in need of an expert pathologist.

An up-to-date and comprehensive review of the discipline of imaging of the knee. The first part discusses the various techniques employed when imaging the knee. Individual chapters are devoted to radiography, arthrography, computed tomography and CT arthrography, magnetic resonance imaging and MR arthrography, and ultrasonography. The rare occurrence of tumors of the facial skeleton, whether of dental origin (odontogenic) or arising from bone (osteogenic), makes it impossible for a single observer to appreciate fully the epi demiologic and clinical behavior of these lesions, even if he controls the case material of a large institution. The systematic cooperation of many scientists is necessary in order to compile a meaningful body of information and make that information accessible for study. On the initiative of one of the authors (B.S.), the German-Austrian Swiss Association for the Study of Tumors of the Face and Jaws (DOSAK) resolved in 1971 to establish a special registry for tumors of the facial skeleton, including odontogenic lesions. This registry has been integrated into the bone tumor registry at the Swiss Asso ciation for Pathology in the Department of Pathology of the Uni versity of Basel. In 1974 DOSAK sponsored a symposium on odontogenic and os teogenic tumors of the jaws, at which illustrative cases were pre sented and discussed. These discussions revealed the problematic nature of these tumors and prompted a number of reclassifications, including some changes from benign to malignant and vice versa. It was found that radical and in some cases mutilating operations would not have been justified on the basis of the new classification. The discussions also underscored the importance of considering all factors - epidemiologic, clinical, radiologic and pathohistologi- when establishing a diagnosis.
