BOOK EXCERPT:
Two Asias provides a fresh perspective on the Asia''s disparate economic prospects in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis and the Great Recession. The financial crisis, its propagation and real economic consequences are carefully documented, and used in conjunction with prior trends to identify the impending reconfiguration of wealth and power in Asia, and between Asia and the developed west. The study highlights Asia''s cultural and systemic diversity, and suggests that China''s, Vietnam''s and South Korea''s extraordinary catch-up during the last two decades is on the cusp of fading due to diverse technical, systemic and global reasons. It shows too that the West has learned little from the 2008 financial crisis, that the planetary macroeconomy is headed for a period of protracted turbulence, all of which suggests that the world community needs to rethink its expectations. These findings are the net assessment of an international team of experts assembled under the auspices of the Japan Foundation''s Center for Global Policy, headed by Steven Rosefielde, Masaaki Kuboniwa and Satoshi Mizobata.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book explores how small nations can mobilise and use productive activities to generate inclusive growth and rapidly move up the economic ladder. In this study, Dr. Wong explores how Korea and Taiwan came to balance between commanding critical technological competencies and driving inclusive-economic agendas and ultimately culminates decades of moving up the value chain for the two Asian dynamos. In a world dominated by superpowers, Dr. Wong demonstrates how agile, nimble mid-sized economies can move fast, innovate and achieve post industrial catch-up development. This book will interest scholars of the Asian manufacturing sector, those with an interest in the role semiconductors play in the global economy, and scholars of Asian development.

BOOK EXCERPT:
An important and critical re-evaluation of South Asia's post-tests nuclear politics, in contrast to other books, this volume emphasises the political dimension of South Asia's nuclear weapons, explains how the bombs are used as politico-strategic assets rather than pure battlefield weapons and how India and Pakistan utilise them for politico-strategic purposes in an extremely complex and competitive South Asian strategic landscape. Written by a group of perceptive observers of South Asia, this volume evaluates the current state of Indo-Pakistani nuclear deterrents, the challenges that the two countries confront in building their nuclear forces, the post-test nuclear doctrines of the two strategic rivals, the implications of Indo-Pakistani politics for regional cooperation, the role of two systemic actors (USA and China) in the region's nuclear politics and the critical issues of confidence-building and nuclear arms control.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Across the twentieth century, Asians imagined universalist ideals centered on the idea of Asia itself, rivaling European colonial thought, liberalism, and race-based nationalisms. Sugata Bose explores the history of Asian universalisms and reflects on their potential amid ongoing nationalist rivalries tied to religious majoritarianism and violence.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In light of the Eurozone crisis and the growth of Asian economies, have new challenges emerged for the relations between nations in these regions? As the Asian consumer class grows and its culture globalizes, what does this mean for the export of Eurocentric values and norms? And what does the future hold for the economic, political, and cultural policies between these two powerful regions? This book explores the relationship between European and emerging Asian economies, as globalization changes the international economic and political landscape. Reflecting on past interactions and possibilities for the future, the book brings together Asian and European perspectives from former politicians, diplomats, and academic experts to examine questions around trade and security, rights and climate change, identity clashes, and the colonial legacy. The book is a timely consideration of highly topical questions that will shape international politics in the twenty-first century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When studying the social phenomena in and around football, five major aspects of globalisation processes become evident: international migration, the global flow of capital, the syncretistic nature of tradition and modernity in contemporary culture, new experiences of time and space and the revolution in information technologies. In an exploration of these themes the collection provides insight into academic studies of football in Portugal, Germany, England, Spain, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the USA. At examining football-related phenomena under the headings of nations and migration, myths and business, the city and the dream, it shows how modernised football itself is object and subject in processes of both neo-liberal globalisation and counter hegemonic globalisation. While the contributions highlight characteristics of particular local and national contexts, the volume focuses on global centre-periphery-relations and migration trajectories of football professionals by analysing recent developments in post-colonial Portuguese speaking areas: The high ranking of "Portuguese football" not only serves in national(ist) discourses or in order to emancipate the country from a marginal position, it also turns Portugal into a football-talent exporter, confronting it partly with the same ambiguous consequences as Brazil and the African countries, who "lose" their football talents to the European centre. The receiving countries, again, include Portugal. This book was previously published as a special issue of Soccer in Society
