BOOK EXCERPT:

The extraordinary true story of a young Jewish art student in wartime Berlin who not just survived but resisted—and retained his infectious zeal for life. Though Cioma Schonhaus was only 11 years old when the Nazis first came to power, his cleverness and resourcefulness eventually made him an unlikely hero and bon vivant. As a young adult staying one step ahead of the S.S., Cioma would dine in swanky restaurants and frequent trendy bars, and have plenty of romances -- all while sabotaging weapons in the munitions factory where he worked. He even bought a sailboat and taught himself how to sail. These hijinks never distracted Cioma from a deeper mission. Trained as an artist, Cioma’s fake ID's ensured that several hundred Jews survived the war. When he learned the Gestapo was closing in on him, Cioma masterminded a singularly daring escape: spending a month biking to Switzerland, he became the only person to cycle his way out of the Third Reich. Beautifully written and deeply satisfying, Two Wheels to Freedom is a story of survival and resistance unlike any other. Arthur J. Magida captures Cioma’s exuberance, charm, spunk and courage. His was a life lived with wonderment, one that the author sets seamlessly against the horrors of history while never losing sight of Cioma’s “wily ways, his zest for life, and his appetite for improbable adventures—all of them delighting in the magic that’s beyond the ordinary and the staid.” Two Wheels to Freedom is an exhilarating read that by turns illuminates and inspires.

Midnight Freedom

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

KOMAL SWAMINATHAN (1935 – 1995) was a playwright in Tamil, a film director and the editor of the Tamil literary magazine 'Subhamangala’. MIDNIGHT FREEDOM is the English version of the Tamil play ‘Naliravil Petrom’ (நள்ளிரவில் பெற்றோம்) written and staged by Komal Swaminathan in early 80s. Midnight Freedom is a political satire that elucidates how two different stories, one about a political crisis for a ruling party and the story of a poor Indian farmer, who fights to retain his cultivable land, are interlinked. It illustrates the ugly faces of Indian politicians who dare to do anything to retain their powers. Komal had written this play in an experimental mode, adopting the style of German theatre exponent Bertolt Brecht, to dramatize a deep-rooted social issue. A play being emotional and holding the audience, making them lose themselves in it, is one approach. Brecht differs from this. Audience should not lose themselves in the play, distance themselves from the characters and feel it is only a drama. Brecht describes this as an alienation technique. He feels one can trigger audience’ thought process through this method. This differs from the generally accepted realism style.

First Taste Of Freedom

BOOK EXCERPT:

The bicycle has long been a part of American culture but few would describe it as an essential element of American identity in the same way that it is fundamental to European and Asian cultures. Instead, American culture has had a more turbulent relationship with the bicycle. First introduced in the United States in the 1830s, the bicycle reached its height of popularity in the 1890s as it evolved to become a popular form of locomotion for adults. Two decades later, ridership in the United States collapsed. As automobile consumption grew, bicycles were seen as backward and unbecoming—particularly for the white middle class. Turpin chronicles the story of how the bicycle’s image changed dramatically, shedding light on how American consumer patterns are shaped over time. Turpin identifies the creation and development of childhood consumerism as a key factor in the bicycle’s evolution. In an attempt to resurrect dwindling sales, sports marketers reimagined the bicycle as a child’s toy. By the 1950s, it had been firmly established as a symbol of boyhood adolescence, further accelerating the declining number of adult consumers. Tracing the ways in which cycling suffered such a loss in popularity among adults is fundamental to understanding why the United States would be considered a "car" culture from the 1950s to today. As a lens for viewing American history, the story of the bicycle deepens our understanding of our national culture and the forces that influence it.

At the dawn of the eighteenth century, Matthew Corbett, professional problem solver, has left New York for Charles Town on an assignment from his agency—and vanished. Featuring Daniel Defoe as a fellow inmate at Newgate, this whirlwind tale of mystery and adventure comes from Robert McCammon, the multiple award-winning author of five previous novels featuring Matthew Corbett, as well as such classics as Swan Song and Boy’s Life. “Rousing . . .
