BOOK EXCERPT:
In this work, the realization limits of an impulse-based Ultra-Wideband (UWB) localization system for indoor applications have been thoroughly investigated and verified by measurements. The analysis spans from the position calculation algorithms, through hardware realization and modeling, up to the localization experiments conducted in realistic scenarios. The main focus was put on identification and characterization of limiting factors as well as developing methods to overcome them.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In our increasingly interconnected world, personalized and technology-assisted healthcare has become a rising trend. In an ageing society, technology enables new ways to care for and assist the elderly. Falls pose a major risk and cause of injuries for senior citizens. Technology-backed fall prevention thus has the potential to avoid severe injuries and further loss of independence, but requires continuous monitoring of the body posture in order to identify imminent falls. This work presents a system concept for a wearable wireless body area network (WBAN) for posture monitoring. It shows the principal feasibility of posture recognition from ultra-wideband (UWB) signals based on a large and diverse set of measurements. For a promising classifier-feature-combination, this work demonstrates how reliable posture recognition can be achieved with a limited number of body-mounted nodes, and analyzes its robustness towards potential pitfalls. It concludes with a proposal for a system implementation, and outlines its integration with existing and future aspects of personalized healthcare.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Chipless RFID based on RF Encoding Particle: Realization, Coding and Reading System explores the field of chipless identification based on the RF Encoding Particle (REP). The book covers the possibility of collecting information remotely with RF waves (RFID) with totally passive tags without wire, batteries, and chips, and even printed on paper. Despite the many benefits of RFID, deployment is still hindered by several economic and technological factors. Among these barriers are the high cost of tags, lack of reliability and security in the information contained in the RFID chip, and how tags are 'recycled.' This book focuses on the development of chipless RFID tags, representing a new family of low cost tags. With this technology information is extracted from the electromagnetic response of the tag, which depends only on its geometry. Various solutions have been developed by the authors to increase the amount of information, reduce the surface of the tag, or improve the robustness of detection. Considerations such as realization using paper substrate, the development of a low cost detection system, and measurements in a real environment have been addressed for practical implementation. - Introduces the chipless RFID REP approach as compared to classical chipless RFID, RFID, and barcode technologies - Includes a demonstration of the practical and economic potential of chipless RFID technology, with detailed presentations and discussions of different test benches and comparisons - Presents in detail numerous examples of chipless tags that are able to tackle specific problems: sensitivity of detection, encoding density, robustness of detection, problem of tag orientation, tags and reader cost, and compliance with emission standards - Focuses on the development of chipless RFID tags, representing a new family of low cost tags

BOOK EXCERPT:
The research described here develops and applies novel, ultra-wideband (UWB) antipodal Vivaldi antennas for high-resolution detection of defects and damages in composite construction materials and structures using their microwave and millimeter wave imaging. The author examines the challenges of applying the UWB microwave technique in that the technique is dependent on the operating frequency used for the specified material under test. In this context, the objectives of this research volume include, but are not limited to, development of a small UWB antenna at frequency range from 5 GHz - 50 GHz for microwave and millimeter wave imaging of wide range of low loss construction materials, design of a small UWB antenna operating for microwave and millimeter wave imaging of low loss and high loss materials for the purpose of detection of surface damages of concrete under low loss materials, and development of a UWB antenna at frequency range from 2 GHz - 27 GHz for microwave imaging of low loss and high loss materials such as concrete structures and layered structures for the purpose of detection of cavities inside concrete.
