BOOK EXCERPT:
"That's Life" addresses the pain and lack of meaning that are evident in so many people's lives. So much of what we deeply need to know to have fulfilling lives is never taught to us directly, so we're left muddling through all too often without a map to guide us.We may live in complex times but that does not mean we have to over-complicate our lives. Rather, the opposite is true ' we need to find our way to a simpler life that embraces common sense. If you're stumbling in your relationships with your partner, with your children, your siblings, your parents, your colleagues or with yourself; if you have pain, whether of loneliness, addiction, worry for others, financial worries or health concerns; if you have gone through divorce, the challenges of a blended family, through the grief of loss or the difficulties of a serious illness, you can find help here.

BOOK EXCERPT:
An examination of Herbert Marcuse’s political claim for the aesthetic dimension, focusing on defamiliarization as a means of developing radical sensibility. In Uncommon Sense, Craig Leonard argues for the contemporary relevance of the aesthetic theory of Herbert Marcuse—an original member of the Frankfurt School and icon of the New Left—while also acknowledging his philosophical limits. His account reinvigorates Marcuse for contemporary readers, putting his aesthetic theory into dialogue with antiracist and anti-capitalist activism. Leonard emphasizes several key terms not previously analyzed within Marcuse’s aesthetics, including defamiliarization, anti-art, and habit. In particular, he focuses on the centrality of defamiliarization—a subversion of common sense that can be a means to the development of what Marcuse refers to as “radical sensibility.” Leonard brings forward Marcuse’s claim that the aesthetic dimension is political because of its refusal to operate according to the repressive common sense that establishes and maintains relationships dictated by advanced capitalism. For Marcuse, defamiliarization is at the center of the aesthetic dimension, offering the direct means of stimulating its political potential. Leonard expands upon Marcuse’s aesthetics by drawing on the work of Sylvia Wynter, going beyond Marcuse’s predominantly European and patrilineal intellectual framework—while still retaining his aesthetic theory’s fundamental characteristics—toward a human dimension requiring decolonial, feminist, antiracist, and counterpoetic perspectives.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Call it self-fulfilling prophecy or the power of suggestion. Whatever you call it, we as spiritual beings, have been created with significant authority over our lives. We have been given the opportunity to decide whether we will grumpily survive life or live a life of passion and joy. Personally, I choose the latter. Our lives are made up of a series of choices. Once we realize this we can take control of those choices and choose a better life. When we deliberately make choices with intention we can focus on the positive, generate energy and passion, and open the door for a better future.Sound idealistic? Perhaps. But, realistic? Definitely!I hope you will join me in Choosing a Better Life.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The only thing common about common sense is that it is in fact uncommon. Sydney-based executive and entrepreneur Paul Gordon has had anything but a common life, and in this humorous, insightful and at times, irreverent, collection of observations, he highlights how little we actually use common sense. Making us laugh about the lives we live, it will confront readers about who they are and where they are heading in this techno-crazed world, while offering uncommon sense tips on money. Expect a pragmatic, simple book that can be read while flying from city to city, that is not afraid to cover some tough topics, be overly honest, but also offer hope for a better future for all through some practical behaviour changes. Uncommon sense is ideally suited to a busy executive of any generation or gender, feeling a touch unfulfilled or out of synch in life generally.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Restoring Honor to an Honorable Vocation is an attempt to denounce those who defile the ministry through their self serving, ungodly and unethical conduct as shepherds of God's sheep. It examines the many ways churches and parishes can keep priests and pastors who abuse their offices from inflicting further injury to the Ministry. It highlights specific actions to neutralize Ecclesial scam artists and discourage them from entering the Priesthood? It is set up as a rallying call to godly priests and pastors, Bishops and Cardinals, Superintendents and General Secretaries of Protestant denominations to usher in a new era of accountability and pastoral service, based upon the principles of spiritual uprightness, integrity and faithfulness unto God.

BOOK EXCERPT:
New Thought Common Sense & What Life Means to Me by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Originally published in 1908. Edited by Rev. Lux Newman & Phineas Parkhurst Quimby Philosophical Society, 2008. Inspirational reading. The philosophy of New Thought is not new; it has not one original idea, but is a simplified and practical form of a very ponderous and wonderful religion. It makes an application to the everyday needs of modern life, of principles and ideas, which the ancients used only for the few who chose the life of adepts.
