Journalism is one of the most important professions today. Without it, large swaths of the world similarly might have remained "dark, impoverished, tortured," because few people would have been aware of the nature and depth of the atrocities therein. You can't fix what you can't find. Indeed, we have only to look at places today where journalists must risk their lives to do their jobs-places such as Central Europe, the Philippines, Mexico, Myanmar, Russia, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Cameroun, Afghanistan, and too many others-to appreciate anew what an incalculable difference the media make, reporting on wars, famines, genocide, and the tyrants who green-light them. But saving the world apparently is not enough. I have included a chapter on Peace Journalism because it uses conflict analysis and transformation to update the concept of balance, fairness and accuracy in reporting. This approach provides a new road map tracing the connections between journalists, their sources, the stories they cover and the consequences of their reporting-the ethics of journalistic intervention to play a role in global peace rather than fuelling conflicts.

The old definitions of journalism are under fire; its occupational identity and importance to democracy, public life, and social justice are contested, while the content, technologies, practices and cultural conditions of production of news are changing. Contemporary developments signal significant shifts in the ways journalism is practiced, conceptualized and taught. This book, written in the context of the World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) held in 2016 at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, offers a collection of essays on some of the key concepts, categories and models that have underpinned WJEC discussions about journalism research and pedagogy. The overall theme of the congress – integrity and the identity of journalism and journalism education across the globe – generated rigorous debate about journalism studies and its distinctiveness and subject matter, and the journalism curriculum today.

This monograph investigates questions around new speakers of Breton, their identities, attitudes, and motivations, and how these intersect with linguistic practices. Investigating post-traditional contexts, it uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches to probe stereotypes around the language and speakers encountered in these settings. Focusing on the lexis in a sample of Breton gathered from radio, online, and print media sources, and on interviews carried out with professional users of Breton, this work illustrates the wide range of backgrounds and practices within the contemporary Breton language community and shows how speakers use Breton to position themselves within this diverse setting.

The Construction of Truth in Contemporary Media Narratives about Risk provides a theoretical framework for how, in a post-truth era, media audiences are able to understand and navigate everyday risk. The book examines media risk narratives and explores forms of truth, experiential knowledge, and authority. Using the concept of parrhesia to show how we invest trust in various types of knowledge in a changing media environment, the book demonstrates how we choose between expert and non-expert information when navigating a seemingly risky world. It considers how news media formats have previously engaged audiences through risk narratives and examines how experiential knowledge has come to hold a valuable place for individuals navigating what we are often told is an increasingly risky and uncertain world. The book also examines the increasingly precarious position of expert knowledge and examines how contemporary truth-games play out between experts and non-experts, and considers how this extends into the world of online and social media. This book will be of interest to those researching or teaching in the areas of criminology, sociology, media and cultural studies, and of interest to readers in professional areas such as journalism and politics.

This book challenges the idea that Western media systems are becoming more American in the digital age, arguing that journalistic cultures are not only significantly different from each other still but also variably open and resistant to change. Drawing upon extensive field research of political reporters and examination of discourses of journalistic professionalism as well institutional analysis, this book finds that occupational norms and values of journalism in the US are vigorously upheld but in fact relatively porous and malleable. In Germany, by contrast, professional boundaries are rather strong and resilient but treated matter-of-factly. Revers argues that this is both a consequence of institutional arrangements of media systems and historically evolved cultural principles of journalism in both countries which mutually constitute each other.

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. Our culture has an uneasy relationship with repetition and sameness. On the one hand, we find familiarity pleasurable and soothing; on the other, we crave novelty and long for a sense of discovery. We blame algorithms, intent on selling us more of the same, and on a media industry too greedy to risk investing in intellectually challenging, radically new, products. Sameness and Repetition in Contemporary Media Culture takes a comprehensive approach that both theorises and historically grounds the idea of repetition in relation to media as something that is deeply embedded in our cultural tradition. This project received funding from the Carlsberg Foundation.

News Networks in Early Modern Europe attempts to redraw the history of European news communication in the 16th and 17th centuries. News is defined partly by movement and circulation, yet histories of news have been written overwhelmingly within national contexts. This volume of essays explores the notion that early modern European news, in all its manifestations – manuscript, print, and oral – is fundamentally transnational. These 37 essays investigate the language, infrastructure, and circulation of news across Europe. They range from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and from the Ottoman Empire to the Americas, focussing on the mechanisms of transmission, the organisation of networks, the spread of forms and modes of news communication, and the effects of their translation into new locales and languages.

A sociological research on the current “narrations” of the crisis reflected by media and the relation between political discourses and popular myths, consists a revealing study of the dominant social representations worldwide. The real inequalities are counterbalanced by cultural industries’ “fairytales”.
