BOOK EXCERPT:
Published in 1998, this text presents two theoretical frameworks for understanding the post-Cold War international systematic transition, and Indo-US relational patterns. The frameworks explain the casual determinants of the current international systematic transition and foreign policy in a comparative perspective. It aims to provide tools not only to gauge the present transition but also to develop warning systems to decipher symptoms of any future international systematic transition of foreign policy behaviour.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book presents two theoretical frameworks for understanding the post-Cold War international systematic transition, and Indo-US relational patterns. The destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked, in a very symbolic way, the beginning of the end of the Cold War. Since then, the intensity, drama and pace of the international events have been so staggering as to have prevented careful reflection on what the end of the Cold War means to governments and people around the world. Scholarly commentaries and incisive analysis continue to fill the press and media at large. Most seemingly agree that the crash of the Soviet Bloc marks a decisive shift in the global configuration of power, while others have categorically envisioned a multipolar world; still others have addressed any one or combination of issues and repurcussion consequent of the end of the Cold War. Yet all of these studies have been limited in their scope - both in terms of geographically Eurocentric focus and in their terms of inquiry as being concerned with only a few of the core and peripheral issues. This book fills this the gap.The frameworks presented in this book explain the causal determinants of the current international systematic transition and foreign policy in a comparative perspective. It thus provides very powerful tools to not only gauge the present transition but also to develop warning systems to decipher symptoms of any future international systematic transition of foreign policy behaviour.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In the initial phase of the Obama administration, India’s ruling class and strategic community formed a perception that the spirit of strategic partnership between the two countries might be diluted on account of China looming large in the priorities of this administration. Despite occasional hiccups in their relationship, this perception was overshadowed by the administration’s recognition of India’s role as counterweight to China in the Asia-Pacific region. This book addresses and re-evaluates the perceptions, policies and perspectives of public policy makers and bureaucratic elites in both India and the US in setting and articulating the tone, tenor and substance of the multi-faceted ties between the two countries. The scope of the book is not exclusively limited to the bilateral relationship in the critical areas such as the Indo-US nuclear deal, defence, security and strategic partnership. Its concerns and ramifications are much wider in global and regional contexts, covering/involving security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, the interface between terrorism and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), China as a factor in India-US relations, and the fallout of the New Delhi-Washington partnership on South Asia.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Metaphors constitute a fundamental way in which humans understand the world around them. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of metaphors in theories of international relations. Until recently, conscious attention to metaphors in theories of international relations has been haphazard and sporadic. This book examines the metaphors that inform the major paradigms in international relations theory. Readers will discover that the vast majority of the terminology cataloguing, defining, and naming theories, concepts, and analytical tools pertaining to the study of international relations are metaphorical in nature. The book concludes that metaphors are an essential element in all aspects of international relations theory.

BOOK EXCERPT:
As the twentieth century draws to a close and the rush to globalization gathers momentum, political and economic considerations are crowding out vital ethical questions about the shape of our future. Now, Hans Küng, one of the world's preeminent Christian theologians, explores these issues in a visionary and cautionary look at the coming global society. How can the new world order of the twenty first century avoid the horrors of the twentieth? Will nations form a real community or continue to aggressively pursue their own interests? Will the Machiavellian approaches of the past prevail over idealism and a more humanitarian politics? What role can religion play in a world increasingly dominated by transnational corporations? Küng tackles these and many other questions with the insight and moral authority that comes from a lifetime's devotion to the search for justice and human dignity. Arguing against both an amoral realpolitik and an immoral resurgence of laissez faire economics, Küng defines a comprehensive ethic founded on the bedrock of mutual respect and humane treatment of all beings that would encompass the ecological, legal, technological, and social patterns that are reshaping civilization. If we are going to have a global economy, a global technology, a global media, Küng argues, we must also have a global ethic to which all nations, and peoples of the most varied backgrounds and beliefs, can commit themselves. "The world," he says, "is not going to be held together by the Internet." For anyone concerned about the world we are creating, A Global Ethic for Global Politics and Economics offers equal measures of informed analysis, compassionate foresight, and wise counsel.
