Understanding Globalisation

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book examines contemporary globalisation, which signifies a growing interconnectedness between people and societies across the world through increasing flows of people, goods, services, finance, and ideas across the borders. The concept of globalisation and its meaning is discussed through insights from scholars such as David Held, Anthony Giddens, David Harvey, Arjun Appadurai, Ulrich Beck, Manuel Castells, Saskia Sassen, and many other scholars to explain divergent perspectives of globalisation. The book also studies threats like nuclear weapons proliferation, global terrorism, environmental security issues, global justice, poverty, migration, and global shifts. It aims to generate readers’ interest in understanding globalisation and analysing the changing dynamics of world politics by studying it from diverse viewpoints. The emergence of COVID-19 and resurgence of great power politics has given rise to the debate of de-globalisation and return of a new kind of ‘cold war’. In this context, this volume will also help readers to understand globalisation in the present changing world order. The book will be useful to the students of political science, international relations, and other interdisciplinary social sciences subjects like political economy and global/international politics.

Understanding Globalisation

Is globalisation just a cliche for our times, an expression of the current 'Zeitgeist', or could it be used as an analytical tool to better understand the profound and rapid changes in the world order that we are currently witnessing? What kind of changes does the the globalisation process imply for the development of democracy, for sovereignty and economic progress? And how can we influence this process towards inclusion instead of marginalisation, towards enhanced democracy instead of uncontrolled market dominance? These are the main themes addressed in this volume by four distinguished scholars, aimed at increasing the understanding of ongoing transformations and thereby improving our capacity to shape our common future.

Understanding Global Skills For 21st Century Professions

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book highlights the increasing need for people who will be working in professions such as teaching, health, engineering and business management to have the skills for living and working in a global society. Globalisation and the challenges resulting from recent political events in Europe and North America have given rise to a need for training and further and higher education programmes to address the skills young people all need to effectively engage in the current global society. Reviewing the range of theories and debates surrounding skills for the twenty-first century, the author suggests there is a need to directly address the real-world issues of today and move beyond abstract concepts such as team work, critical thinking and problem solving, as important as these concepts are. The author proposes a new framework for global skills using examples from international and national policy-makers and evidence from further and higher educational programmes and training courses. This pioneering yet practical book will be of value to students and scholars of global education as well as practitioners and policy makers.

Understanding Globalization

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book discusses eight dimensions of globalization—world order, culture, the state, information technology, economics, production, development, and Bretton Woods Institutions—from the perspective of four diverse sociological paradigms: functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist, and radical structuralist. This multi-perspective approach forces readers to abandon their preconcieved assumptions and allows them the opportunity to view globalization through new eyes. Kavous Ardalan argues that social theory can usefully be conceived in terms of these four key paradigms because each one is founded upon different assumptions about the nature of social science and each one generates useful theories, concepts, and analytical tools. This method facilitates distancing from one's favored paradigm and appreciating other available approaches to better understand social phenomena. The knowledge of paradigms increases awareness of the boundaries and limitations of each individual paradigm. While most books on the topic focus on particular aspects of globalization from specific viewpoints, this fair and unbiased volume provides readers with a balanced understanding of globalization.

Does Globalisation Represent A Triumph Of The Lockean Heartland

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Sussex, 33 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Globalisation is one of the most debated topics of our times and is said to transform the economic and social spheres around the globe in a drastic manner. However, globalisation is a highly complex concept and not easily graspable. There are two extreme points of view regarding the phenomenon of globalisation. One, termed 'Hyperglobalist' claims that the world is becoming inevitably borderless and that truly global companies are the primary actors in this globalised world; states are only required to provide basic infrastructure and public goods needed by the companies (See Ohmae: "The Borderless World"). A second extreme point of view, referred to as 'Sceptical', maintains that states are still the main actors in the global political economy and that the worldwide economic integration of today is not unprecedented in history (See Hirst and Thompson: "Globalization in Question"). It will be the task of this work to thoroughly analyse the phenomenon of globalisation and to uncover its underlying causes and its consequences for states, companies and societies around the world. One of the essential questions to answer will be, whether globalisation is a 'natural' phenomenon connected to advancements in technology or a project driven by certain actors, namely the 'Lockean heartland' (primarily the United States and Great Britain). The introduction and analysis of the Lockean state/society complex will be vital in this respect. In the first chapter, earlier forms of globalisation in history will be examined and embryonic forces that enabled future globalisation will be exposed. Following is a chapter about the changes in the global political economy since the end of the Second World War; various decisions and processes will be analysed that sh
