Advances In Medical Biochemistry Genomics Physiology And Pathology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The pace and sophistication of advances in medicine in the past two decades have necessitated a growing need for a comprehensive reference that highlights current issues in medicine. Each volume in the Current Issues in Medicine series is a stand‐alone text that provides a broad survey of various critical topics—all accomplished in a user-friendly yet interconnected format. The series not only highlights current advances but also explores related topics such as translational medicine, regulatory science, neglected diseases, global pandemics, patent law, immunotoxicology, theranostics, big data, artificial intelligence, novel imaging tools, combination drug products, and novel therapies. While bridging the gap between basic research and clinical medicine, this series provides a thorough understanding of medicine’s potential to address health problems from both the patient’s and the provider’s perspectives in a healthcare setting. The range of topics covered and the expertise of the contributing authors accurately reflect the rapidly evolving areas within medicine—from basic medical sciences to clinical specialties. Each volume is essential reading for physicians, medical students, nurses, fellows, residents, undergraduate and graduate students, educators, policymakers, and biomedical researchers. The multidisciplinary approach of the series makes it a valuable reference resource for the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and governments. However, unlike other series on medicine or medical textbooks, this series focuses on current trends, perspectives, and issues in medicine that are central to healthcare delivery in the 21st century. Volume 1 focuses on the current issues in basic medical sciences, subjects that are fundamental to the practice of medicine. Specifically, it covers medical biochemistry, genomics, physiology, and pathology. These subjects, traditionally taught in the first two years of medical school that precede clinical instruction, provide a core of basic knowledge critical to the success in clinical medicine during rotations, training, and medical practice.

Quality Control Of Cellular Protein In Neurodegenerative Disorders

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Protein misfolding and aggregation are hallmarks of several neurodegenerative proteinopathies. Though multiple factors like aging, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, proteotoxic insults, genetic inconsistency, etc. are responsible for the dysfunction of the neuronal protein quality control system, targeting protein quality control has become an auspicious approach to halt the propagation of neurodegeneration. Quality Control of Cellular Protein in Neurodegenerative Disorders provides diverse aspects exploring the role of the protein quality control in neurodegenerative disorders and potential therapeutic strategies to combat the development and propagation of neurodegeneration. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as molecular chaperones, protein misfolding, and stress signaling, this book is ideally designed for neurobiologists, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists, medical professionals, neuropathologists, researchers, academicians, students, and practitioners engaged in studies of the protein quality control system in neuronal cells.

Protein Modificomics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Protein Modificomics: From Modifications to Clinical Perspectives comprehensively deals with all of the most recent aspects of post-translational modification (PTM) of proteins, including discussions on diseases involving PTMs, such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, X-linked spinal muscular atrophy-2, aneurysmal bone cyst, angelman syndrome and OFC10. The book also discusses the role PTMs play in plant physiology and the production of medicinally important primary and secondary metabolites. The understanding of PTMs in plants helps us enhance the production of these metabolites without greatly altering the genome, providing robust eukaryotic systems for the production and isolation of desired products without considerable downstream and isolation processes. - Provides thorough insights into the post translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins in both the plant and animal kingdom - Presents diagrammatic representations of various protein modification and estimation mechanisms in four-color - Includes coverage of diseases involving post translational modifications

Redox Signaling In Neurodegenerative Diseases Biomarkers Targets And Therapies

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Redox homeostasis results from the balance between the production of reactive species (e.g. ROS, RNS, etc) and their detoxification by endogenous or exogenous antioxidants. ROS play several important physiological roles, however, their excessive production or impaired detoxification is associated with oxidative stress and cellular injury. Importantly, oxidative damage to vulnerable central nervous system (CNS) cells is a common pathological feature of several neurodegenerative diseases. Antioxidants have been considered as attractive potential therapeutic agents to prevent or halt disease progression but the clinical efficacy of antioxidant treatment strategies is still marginal. Improvement of antioxidant therapy effectiveness might involve adjustment of preclinical to clinical settings and development of new efficient delivery methods and will require a more in-depth knowledge of cellular redox-signaling mechanisms. Promising novel redox-based therapeutic strategies are gaining relevance to combat oxidative stress associated with neurodegenerative diseases. These include boosting the endogenous antioxidant machinery through activation of the antioxidant master regulator Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) or modulation of ROS production by NOX (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase) inhibitors. Redox regulation of key cellular functions is currently recognized as an important cellular signaling mechanism and events such as post-translational modifications (e.g. S_glutathionylation, S_nitrosylation, glycosylation, etc) play important roles in redox signal transduction and might be instrumental to uncover pathological mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic targets in neurodegenerative diseases. This Research Topic focuses on redox signaling mechanisms and aims to provide novel insights into the role of redox-signaling, with particular emphasis on redox regulation involving post-translational modifications, in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, it aims to present an overview of the potential of antioxidants as therapeutics for CNS disorders with a special focus on emerging novel therapeutic redox-based strategies. We are particularly interested in studies: -addressing new redox-based molecular mechanisms contributing to neurodegenerative diseases; -exploring the role of naturally occurring compounds, standard medications, and nutraceuticals with antioxidant properties in modulating redox-signaling pathways and limiting and/or preventing oxidative damage associated with these disorders; -addressing mechanistically the role of post-translational modifications in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders.
