BOOK EXCERPT:
This books arises from the observation that mainstream psychology, especially work and organisational psychology (WOP), suffers from critical limitations in its attempts to deal with the complexities of work as a cultural phenomenon. We can only mention a few examples here. In the WOP field, especially in Anglo- Saxon tradition, work experiences are seen through the lenses of traditional behavioural approaches, whereas culture is seen as a ‘software of the mind’, to use a popular definition found in this field (based on cross-cultural mainstream psychology). ‘Competences’, to take another example, are thought of as something that do or do not people have inside them. Suffering, like stress (a common work-based problem of our times), is considered to be dependent on a person’s personality, perceptions or as a set of behaviours triggered by facing an ‘objective’ environment. Even meaning-making process can be found to be defined from a WOP mainstream point of view: meanings are ‘social cognitions’ shared by people by means of unidirectional socialisation processes. Therefore, the goal of this book is to deliver to the reader a new and challenging theoretical and methodological tool box, inspired by insights developed from a broad cultural psychological perspective. Its focus is on the consideration of work and organisations based on core concepts developed inside cultural psychology. Therefore, it is designed to discuss potential extensions of these concepts to work psychology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book contains contributions from the conference Salzburger Anstosse 2010 that was devoted to the multidisciplinary exploration of resilience and unemployment. Resilience is a universal phenomenon, albeit it is differentially distributed within the human species in terms of its modes of expression and effects. One might refer to it as a fundamental element in the adaptive survival make-up of persons and social groups. The book contains a range of illustrations of resilient adaptation in the context of unemployment, one of the fundamental problems of our time. (Series: Perspectives on Social Ethics - Vol. 4)

BOOK EXCERPT:
Richie was the real deal. He knew how to work a corner. Yet, his book isnt a run-of-the-mill boxing story. Its a record of a time when a guy from the streets would fi nd a place like Mack Lewiss in Baltimore, not to learn a sport, but to survive. The fact that he spent time in two of the toughest gyms in America, Mr. Macks place and Johnny Toccos in Vegas, gives him a unique angle on the game. He knew the greats. Oh yeah. And he could write as well as he could throw a left hook. Gene Kilroy, trusted confidante and business manager for Muhammad Ali My friend John White digs deep into the typewritten reminiscences of a troubled man, Richie Westcott, and pulls forth a story much richer than any of us who knew him could ever have expected. Amazing Layla McCarter, Six-time world champion & female boxing pioneer I bought Richie a computer when I took over the gym. Of course, I had no idea he was turning out such a story. I really liked the guy. He worked hard to help the young fighters. Luis Tapia, highly successful boxing manager and trainer, and former owner of Johnny Toccos Ringside Gym
