When a dead body is found in the royal box of her sorcerous theater, Mage Nevis Conarkin is shocked to realize that she’s being framed for murder. Although Nevis cannot provide an alibi to prove her innocence, she apparently has a motive to have stabbed the corpse. While struggling to uncover the true villain, with the help of her flamboyant friend who operates the local brothel, Nevis unhappily finds the evidence pointing to one of her actors. In the midst of the murder investigation, Nevis dives into the chaos of rehearsals for the opening night of a play she detests. The script commemorates her successful defeat of a renegade mage, her personal friend, and his plot to allow an invasion by Cashogi foreigners. Hating to be in the spotlight and wishing to avoid the sad memories engendered by the play, Nevis is unable to convince Devlin Graham, the monarch and Nevis’ lover, to cancel the performance. And so the rehearsals—fraught with touchy actors, frazzled stage crew, dangerous incidents, and interruptions from the hard-nosed constable—move forward.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The true story behind the Nazi saboteurs captured on Long Island in 1942, their betrayal by J. Edgar Hoover, and the shameful secret behind the case the established the reputation of the FBI. At 4 AM on a foggy morning in 1942, Nazi submarines discharged eight men along the coasts of Long Island and Florida. A few days later, J. Edgar Hoover further burnished his reputation by announcing the swift capture of Nazi soldiers found prowling our shores, intent on sabotage. Omitted from the record (and still denied by the FBI) is the true story behind Hoover's greatest publicity coup: the saboteurs' leader, George Dasch, betrayed his own country by turning himself in first to a disbelieving FBI. Hoover promised Dasch clemency and assurances that the jerry-rigged "military tribunal" created to try the men as "unlawful combatants" was merely a formality to protect loved ones from Nazi retribution. Using documentation from the FBI archives, interviews and memoirs, David Alan Johnson carefully recounts the mounting betrayals in this utterly engrossing saga.

Betrayal

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Betrayal loudly rings the alarm for a somnolent American Jewry. Read it and wake others.” —Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum “If you think it’s time for the American Jewish community, its organizations, and its leadership, to have an honest, challenging, vigorous debate about where we are going—and what mistakes we have made—then read this important, illuminating, sometimes depressing, but ultimately inspiring, book.” —Gil Troy, Distinguished Scholar of North American History at McGill University, and editor of the three-volume set Theodor Herzl: Zionist Writings This book—perhaps the first devoted to this topic—documents the devastating failure of the Jewish establishment, including its leaders and major donors, to defend and protect American Jews as anti-Semitism surges across the country. It is a collection of essays by writers who care about the welfare of the Jewish community. Some of the essayists are prominent, some are local activists engaged in ongoing battles to defend the community. Some essays offer analyses, others give disturbing, in-depth accounts of the failures themselves. All of them rebuke the Jewish leaders and institutions who have abandoned their responsibilities. While Jewish leaders cling to a utopian belief system which comports with their naïve political ideology, the ugly reality their mindset ignores only worsens. Betrayed by their leaders, the essayists argue, American Jews require new, strong leadership. The book itself is an expanded version of a collection published in the Spring 2022 issue of White Rose Magazine, a publication which promotes classical liberalism in the face of political extremism and is named in honor of the anti-Nazi White Rose resistance movement. BOOK EXCERPT:

PREVIEW A devastating affair. An unexpected pregnancy. A new love waiting to be explored. An old flame longing to be rekindled. Could there possibly be Love after Betrayal? *** How do you flush twelve years of marriage down the drain? Can you flush twelve years of marriage down the drain? When Gunner, Bria's husband of a dozen years, tells her that he's fathered a child outside of their marriage, her whole life plan is turned upside down. While she freely admits that she's been married to her career, she thought they were on the same page: she'd make partner at her corporate law firm, his construction firm would thrive, and then they'd start a family. They'd be financially secure – creating a life without the money worries they both grew up with. That's why Bria couldn't process what Gunner was telling her. *** "I'm sorry, but I had to tell you. I'm sorry, Bria. You have to believe me," Gunner pleaded. "I want to work through this. I'm hoping that in time you can forgive me. I love you. You're the only woman I've ever loved. You know this." He looked sincere. He sounded sincere. She knew this man. She loved this man. But … "Work through this?" Bria laughed humorlessly, drowning out the voices in her head and the love in her heart. "Let me get this straight. You‘re telling me that you've been cheating on me; that you have a one-month old baby with whoever the slut is, and you want me," she said, putting her index finger to her chest, "to somehow find it in me to work things out with you? Have you lost your ever-loving mind?!" she exploded. *** It couldn't be true. It just couldn't. But it was. And she had to accept it. But when Bria suddenly finds herself pregnant, will she and her ex-husband find their way back to each other? Or, will she find lasting love with a new flame?

Betrayal And Other Acts Of Subversion

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Asian American women have long dealt with charges of betrayal within and beyond their communities. Images of their "disloyalty" pervade American culture, from the daughter who is branded a traitor to family for adopting American ways, to the war bride who immigrates in defiance of her countrymen, to a figure such as Yoko Ono, accused of breaking up the Beatles with her "seduction" of John Lennon. Leslie Bow here explores how representations of females transgressing the social order play out in literature by Asian American women. Questions of ethnic belonging, sexuality, identification, and political allegiance are among the issues raised by such writers as Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Bharati Mukherjee, Jade Snow Wong, Amy Tan, Sky Lee, Le Ly Hayslip, Wendy Law-Yone, Fiona Cheong, and Nellie Wong. Beginning with the notion that feminist and Asian American identity are mutually exclusive, Bow analyzes how women serve as boundary markers between ethnic or national collectives in order to reveal the male-based nature of social cohesion. In exploring the relationship between femininity and citizenship, liberal feminism and American racial discourse, and women's domestic abuse and human rights, the author suggests that Asian American women not only mediate sexuality's construction as a determiner of loyalty but also manipulate that construction as a tool of political persuasion in their writing. The language of betrayal, she argues, offers a potent rhetorical means of signaling how belonging is policed by individuals and by the state. Bow's bold analysis exposes the stakes behind maintaining ethnic, feminist, and national alliances, particularly for women who claim multiple loyalties.

Savings And Trust The Rise And Betrayal Of The Freedman S Bank

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A leading historian exposes how the rise and tragic failure of the Freedman’s Bank has shaped economic inequality in America. In the years immediately after the Civil War, tens of thousands of former slaves deposited millions of dollars into the Freedman’s Bank. African Americans envisioned this new bank as a launching pad for economic growth and self-determination. But only nine years after it opened, their trust was betrayed and the Freedman’s Bank collapsed. Fully informed by new archival findings, historian Justene Hill Edwards unearths a major turning point in American history in this comprehensive account of the Freedman’s Bank and its depositors. She illuminates the hope with which the bank was first envisioned and demonstrates the significant setback that the sabotage of the bank caused in the fight for economic autonomy. Hill Edwards argues for a new interpretation of its tragic failure: the bank’s white financiers drove the bank into the ground, not Fredrick Douglass, its final president, or its Black depositors and cashiers. A page-turning story filled with both well-known figures like Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Jay and Henry Cooke, and General O. O. Howard, and less well-known figures like Dr. Charles B. Purvis, John Mercer Langston, Congressman Robert Smalls, and Ellen Baptiste Lubin. Savings and Trust is necessary reading for those seeking to understand the roots of racial economic inequality in America.
