The purpose of this book is to set out the key lessons learned and to provide recommendations and guidance based on existing cases and examples for a wide range of actors involved in urban food systems. In particular, the aim is for this publication to serve as a sourcebook for local decision-makers, policy advisors, urban planners, specialists, practitioners and others involved in urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA). The sourcebook is also for those involved in the design and implementation of production schemes, planning of urban food strategies, and policies concerning agriculture in urban and peri-urban areas.

The population of the world is steadily growing. Most of this population growth is concentrated in cities and urban areas, which means, 68 percent of the world’s 9.7 billion inhabitants will be urban dwellers by 2050. However, many of those currently living in cities especially, though not exclusively, in the Global South, are malnourished, impoverished and food insecure. Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is a vital strategy for building the resilience of cities’ food supply, reducing poverty and increasing employment, improving nutritional outcomes, and mitigating environmental degradation of urban spaces. While UPA is no silver bullet, when combined with effective city-region planning, the food system can more effciently meet the needs of diverse actors in urban areas. To provide additional insights into how UPA is managed as input for the “Urban and peri-urban agriculture: from production to food systems”, Rikolto conducted a series of case studies in six cities around the world, which are Quito (the Republic of Ecuador), Leuven (the Kingdom of Belgium), Dakar (the Republic of Senegal), Arusha (the United Republic of Tanzania), Surakarta (the Republic of Indonesia) and Tegucigalpa(the Republic of Honduras). This report first gives detailed accounts of each city and its UPA policies, challenges and practices. These are grouped according to the themes of land (availability, tenure); water(irrigation, access); labour(seasonal versus full-time, worker profile); finance (expenses, revenues, access to credit); agronomy(UPA practices, technical assistance) andvalue chain (commercialization, availability of inputs, consumer profiles). While policy mechanisms and support interventions are included among these themes, a policy overview presents the final theme of governance. These city accounts are followed by a comparative overview of all six cities and culminate in generalizable lessons-learned, interesting findings, and actionable recommendations for planners and policy-makers.

Investing to promote agricultural growth and poverty reduction is a central pillar of the World Bank's current rural strategy, 'Reaching the Rural Poor' (2003). This 'Sourcebook' addresses how to implement the rural strategy, by sharing information on investment options and identifying innovative approaches that will aid the design of future lending programs for agriculture. It provides generic good practices and many examples that demonstrate investment in agriculture can provide rewarding and sustainable returns to development efforts. The 'Sourcebook' draws on a wide range of experiences from donor agencies, governments, institutions, and other groups active in agricultural development. It is an invaluable reference tool for policy makers, professionals, academics and students, and anyone with an interest in agricultural investments.

Asia is not only the largest producer of important food items like rice and vegetable oil, but also the largest importer of commodities like soybeans and corn. Additionally, more than half the world's population lives in Asia and thus the largest number of food insecure people are also in Asia. Food security is therefore a matter of paramount importance in Asia.This is the only book of its kind that will explore the range of important issues affecting food security in Asia since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights include discussions on the current state of production on food of vital importance to Asia such as rice, vegetable and fish, as well as information on their future trends in production and consumption. The 'Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook' provides an up-to-date understanding of gender issues and a rich compilation of compelling evidence of good practices and lessons learned to guide practitioners in integrating gender dimensions into agricultural projects and programs. It is serves as a tool for: guidance; showcasing key principles in integrating gender into projects; stimulating the imagination of practitioners to apply lessons learned, experiences, and innovations to the design of future support and investment in the agriculture sector. The Sourcebook draws on a wide range of experience from World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other donor agencies, governments, institutions, and groups active in agricultural development. The Sourcebook looks at: access to and control of assets; access to markets, information and organization; and capacity to manage risk and vulnerability through a gender lens. There are 16 modules covering themes of cross-cutting importance for agriculture with strong gender dimensions (Policy, Public Administration and Governance; Agricultural Innovation and Education; Food Security; Markets; Rural Finance; Rural Infrastructure; Water; Land; Labor; Natural Resource Management; and Disaster and Post-Conflict Management) and specific subsectors in agriculture (Crops, Livestock, Forestry, and Fisheries). A separate module on Monitoring and Evaluation is included, responding to the need to track implementation and development impact. This study, titled "FAO in Türkiye" presents an overview of the activities and initiatives undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Türkiye. It comprehensively covers the program areas, major themes, and ongoing projects within the FAO in Türkiye Office. The primary objective of this study is to illustrate how the FAO Representation in Türkiye aligns its operations with the core guiding principle of FAO, known as the "Four Betters." This study unveils the remarkable diversity, both thematically and geographically, of FAO's programs and projects in Türkiye. Ranging from sustainable food systems to addressing climate change, promoting food literacy, and empowering rural women, it seeks to convey the important message that FAO actively contributes to various aspects of the agri-food system in Türkiye and its broader impact. Within the aforementioned framework, this study emphasizes key initiatives such as the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programme, projects supported by the Global Environment Facility, and the Syrian Refugee Resilience Plan. Furthermore, it furnishes valuable insights into the Country Office's relationships with donors and key stakeholders. In summary, this study sheds light on FAO's pivotal role in advancing Turkish agriculture and rural communities over the past four decades through initiatives aimed at capacity development, technical cooperation, policy dialogue, and spanning across sectors including crop production, livestock, fisheries, forestry, as well as agri-food industry and rural development.

Policies promoting pro-poor agricultural growth are the key to helping countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals especially the goal of halving poverty and hunger by 2015. The public sector, private sector, and civil society organizations are working to enhance productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector to reduce rural poverty and sustain the natural resource base. The pathways involve participation by rural communities, science and technology, knowledge generation and further learning, capacity enhancement, and institution building. Sustainable land management (SLM) an essential component of such policies will help to ensure the productivity of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and hydrology. SLM will also support a range of ecosystem services on which agriculture depends. The 'Sustainable Land Management Sourcebook' provides a knowledge repository of tested practices and innovative resource management approaches that are currently being tested. The diverse menu of options represents the current state of the art of good land management practices. Section one identifies the need and scope for SLM and food production in relation to cross-sector issues such as freshwater and forest resources, regional climate and air quality, and interactions with biodiversity conservation and increasingly valuable ecosystem services. Section two categorizes the diversity of land management systems globally and the strategies for improving household livelihoods in each system type. Section three presents a range of investment notes that summarize good practice, as well as innovative activity profiles that highlight design of successful or innovative investments.
