His research interests include international development, social planning and community planning. He is the author of numerous journal articles. Judith L. Hanna is senior research scholar in the departments of dance and anthropology at the University of Maryland. She is the author of numerous journal articles and books on the subject of dance.

Urban areas have been selected as the foci of the study because of their enormous importance to the countries in which they are located as well as to the international arena. Most urban areas of Black Africa have intensive contact with the non-African world; they provide environments which are favorable to change; and they are centers of culture, society, economy, and polity, and the hubs of the communications and transportation networks. Stylistically, the study relies heavily upon general statements concerning urban dynamics. The statements are based primarily upon a comprehensive survey of the English and French literature on urban areas and urbanization in Black Africa, as regards the patterns of urban growth, urban migration and commitment, impact of migration and town life upon the individual, urban conditions, urban ethnicity, nonethnic practices and perspectives, bases of political conflict, bases of political integration, and patterns of change. The growth of cities is one of the most significant aspects of the contemporary transformation of African societies. Cities in Africa are the sites of major political, economic and social innovation, and thus play a critical role in national politics, domestic economic growth and social development. They are also key platforms for interaction with the wider world and mediate between global and national contexts. Cities are variously positioned in global flows of resources, goods and ideas, and are shaped by varied historical trajectories and local cultures. The result is a great diversity of urban societies across the continent. Cities in Africa are not only growing rapidly but are also undergoing deep political, economic and social transformation. They are changing in ways that defy usual notions of urbanism. In their dazzling complexity, they challenge most theories of the urban. African cities represent major challenges as well as opportunities. Both need to be understood and addressed if a sustainable urban future is to be achieved on the continent. Rapid growth, unmanageable cities, urban crisis, macrocephali... The cities of west Africa are no longer ‘plannable’ – at least not using traditional urban development tools. Without negating the importance of participatory processes in city creation, it nonetheless seems crucial to return to city plans and models, to what cities convey, and how they are built. But to understand the city in all its depth and richness, we must also hit the streets. The West African City proposes a dual perspective. At the urban scale, it analyses historical trajectories, spatial development, and urban planning documents to highlight the major trends beyond the plans. At the second level – that of public space – the street is discussed as the city’s lifeblood. By innovating approaches and testing new methods, The West African City offers an unconventional look at Nouakchott, Dakar and Abidjan, the three study sites for this investigation. The city of today, in Africa or elsewhere, must re-examine its many social, economic, cultural, political, and spatial dimensions; for this, urban research has begun challenging its own methods.
