With recent advances in IT in areas such as AI and IoT, collaboration systems such as business chat, cloud services, conferencing systems, and unified communications are rapidly becoming widely used as new IT applications in global corporations’ strategic activities. Through in-depth longitudinal studies of global corporations, the book presents a new theoretical framework and implications for IT-enabled dynamic capabilities using collaboration systems from the perspective of micro strategy theory and organization theory. The content of the book is based on longitudinal analyses that employ various qualitative research methods including ethnography, participant observation, action research and in-depth case studies of global corporations in Europe, the United States and Asia that actively use collaboration systems. Multimedia data are used more and more widely in human being's life, e.g., videoconferencing, visual telephone, IPTV, etc. Nearly most of the applications need multimedia transmission techniques that send multimedia data from one side to another side and keep the properties of efficiency, robustness and security. Here, the efficiency denotes the time cost of transmission operations, the robustness denotes the ability to survive transmission errors or noises, and the security denotes the protection of the transmitted media content. Recently, various intelligent or innovative techniques are invented, which bring vast performance improvements to practical applications. For example, such content transmission techniques as p2p, sensor network and ad hoc network are constructed, which adaptively use the peers’ properties to improve the network’s resources. Multimedia adaptation techniques can adjust the multimedia data rate in order to compliant with the network’s bandwidth. This book includes a set of selected papers from the first "International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems," (ICEIS'99) held in SeÜtbal, Portugal, from 27 to 30 March 1999. ICEIS focuses on real world applications and aims at becoming a major point of contact between research scientists, engineers and practitioners in the area of business applications of information systems. This year four simultaneous tracks were held, covering different aspects related to enterprise computing, including: Systems Analysis and Specijication, Database Technology and its Applications, Artijicial Intelligence and Decision Support Systems, and Internet and Intranet Computing. Although ICEIS'99 received more than 200 submissions, only 96 papers were accepted for oral presentation and only 24 were selected for inclusion in this book. These numbers demonstrate stringent quality criteria and the intention of maintaining a high quality forum for future editions ofthis conference. A number of additional keynote lectures, case studies and technical tutorials were also held. These presentations, by specialists in different knowledge areas made an important contribution to increase the overall quality of the Conference, and are partially expressed in the first two papers of the book.
