Malcolm Muggeridge

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This biography of Malcolm Muggeridge traces the varied life of one of the most brilliant and controversial men of the twentieth century. The author, Ian Hunter, was given full access to all of Muggeridge's unpublished material, letters, and diaries. The result is an objective, well-researched, and honest account that is sometimes at variance with Muggeridge's own recollection of events. Ian Hunter captures the humor, the intellect, the rawness of perception, the abandoned honesty of a man engaged in knowing himself, his world, and his God. Malcolm Muggeridge was not merely a "vendor of words," as he invariably described himself, but was also a celebrated author, broadcaster, lecturer, debater, traveller, journalist and television personality, a one-time ardent admirer of the Soviet system, a World War II intelligence agent, and a former agnostic turned committed Christian. To many people, however, Malcolm Muggeridge was admired above all for his superb use of the English language. It is to the credit of Ian Hunter that after reading this biography one has a clearer understanding of an extraordinary man. Dr. Ian Hunter is professor emeritus at the University of Western Ontario. His articles and reviews have appeared in many Canadian and American poublications. He edited two collections of Muggeridge's writings: Things Past and The Very Best of Malcolm Muggeridge; he also wrote a biography of Muggeridge's friend, Hesketh Pearson (Nothing to Repent: The Life of Heskerth Pearson).

Classic Catholic Converts

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Classic Catholic Converts presents the compelling stories of over 25 well-known converts to Catholicism from the 19th and 20th centuries. It tells of powerful testimonials to God's grace, men and women from all walks of life in Europe and America whose search for the fullness of truth led them to the Catholic Church. It is the witness of brilliant intellectuals, social workers, scientists, authors, film producers, clergy, businessmen, artists and others who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, studied and prayed their way into the Church. Fr. Charles Connor writes insightful and wonderfully readable stories of a rich variety of converts who struggled greatly with many challenges as they embraced Catholicism, including rejection by loved ones, persecution from strangers, and misunderstanding by peers. But, once they responded to God's call, they experienced great inner peace, contentment and joy. Among the famous converts whose stories are told here include John Henry Newman, Edith Stein, Jacques Maritain, Dorothy Day, G.K. Chesterton, Elizabeth Seton, Karl Stern, Ronald Knox and many more. "A great gift at a moment of history when conversions to the Catholic Church are receiving renewed attention. Marvelously readable stories highlight the vivid diversity of the personalities and the unity of the truth that still brings restless souls into full communion with the Church of Jesus Christ." Rev. Richard John Neuhaus Editor, First Things "This fine parade of men and women, described with insight by Father Connor, shows how long is the reach of the Holy Spirit and how varied are the personalities He has gathered to Himself." Rev. George W. Rutler Author, A Crisis of Saints "The touching conversion stories that Fr. Connor so concisely presents convey the joys as well as the struggles that converts continue to experience on their journey into the Catholic Church." Marcus C. Grodi President, The Coming Home Network "This book reminds 'cradle Catholics' of the pearl of great price that is ours and should motivate many of us to a sharper sense of evangelization as the new Millennium begins. Rich information and valuable insights abound-highly recommended!" Most Reverend Edwin F. O'Brien Archbishop for the Military Services Fr. Charles Connor, a pastor of a parish in the diocese of Scranton, PA, is an expert in Church history. He is the host of several television series on EWTN including Historic Catholic Converts.

Enter The Kingdom

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Although many moral systems have been developed across history, Enter the Kingdom goes far beyond understanding virtue simply as the means to achieve moral goodness. It is a full presentation of the uniqueness of Christian virtue. Although the Christian virtues are rooted in natural virtues, they are distinct in two ways. First, Christian virtues can only be known as gifts of grace. Second, Christian virtues enable people of faith to enter deep intimacy with God. Enter the Kingdom has a chapter on each of twelve virtues that most enhance Christian spiritual formation. All twelve virtues are grounded in Scripture and Christian tradition. Some, incorporating spiritual concepts that are impossible to translate precisely into English, are presented under their original Greek names. They are humility, faith, hope, agape, apatheia, peace, kindness, generosity, purity of heart, praos, upomone, and wisdom. The final chapter, “The Way Home,” presents a pattern of spiritual formation designed to move a person of faith from a state of sin and alienation to a state of grace and intimacy with God. An “Addendum” lays out a prayer discipline, which will enable a person of faith to fully embrace Christian virtue.

Seeing Through The Eye

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Malcolm Muggeridge was one of Great Britain's most well-known journalists and television personalities, having interviewed practically every major public figure of his time. He shocked the world with his conversion to Christianity later in life. "St. Mugg", as he was affectionately known, was clear in his new-found faith: It is the truth that has died, not God, and "Jesus was God or he was nothing." These wonderful selections of Muggeridge's writings and speeches cover a wide variety of spiritual themes, revealing his profound faith, great wit, and lively writing style. Topics include "Jesus: The Man Who Lives", "Is There a God?", "The Prospect of Death", "Do We Need Religion?", "Peace and Power", and many more. "The counter-countercultural declaration of Mr. Muggeridge's conversion was especially eye-catching given the great legions traveling in the opposite direction. His larger public knew him through his work as a television host and critic. But all of literate England, and much of America, knew him as a learned and incisive journalist who had written Winter in Moscow, a searing exposé of Communism. His intellect and historical savoir-faire gave his criticisms a very long reach. In America he made regular appearances as book editor of Esquire magazine. No Englishman has a more mordant, more attractive wit." —William F. Buckley, Jr., From the Introduction

This is a journey through the practical, life transforming message of Christ and how the world, measures up against Him. He was a revolutionary and his revolution was not of this world. Searching For God In Britain And Beyond

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

When writer and media personality Malcolm Muggeridge unexpectedly converted to Christianity in the 1960s, fans around the world flocked to his devotional writings and television programs about his spiritual journey. Because Muggeridge was critical of institutional Christianity and initially refused to join a church, he inspired a special affinity in those who were disillusioned with mainstream religious authority. Readers from around the world sent him deeply personal letters describing their spiritual and religious lives, revealing their anxieties, doubts, and hopes about the future of Christianity. In Searching for God in Britain and Beyond David Reagles draws on nearly two thousand of these remarkable fan letters to explore the thoughts and feelings of ordinary Christians in a time of cultural and religious upheaval. In these candid letters, Muggeridge’s correspondents wrestled with their experiences of faith and doubt, the value of institutional religion, uncertainties about permissiveness in society, the proper role of Christian social activism, and the forces of secularism. For these fans and skeptics alike, reading and writing were a vital means of working out their religious identities and convictions amid the supposed decline of Christendom. Searching for God in Britain and Beyond provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the inner worlds of ordinary Christians in the 1960s and 1970s, revealing how the secularization of postwar society felt to average people.
