BOOK EXCERPT:
Viruses pose a huge burden on public health systems and the economy worldwide. In the case of humans, viruses make up about two-thirds of all new human pathogens. Both DNA and RNA viruses can cause acute, persistent, or latent infections, as they can integrate their genome into the host DNA, such as the endogenous retroviruses, which can be associated with a wide variety of cancers in animals and humans. In recent years, viruses have emerged not only as a health threat but also as a potential alternative for producing new diagnostic tools as well as prophylactic/therapeutic approaches to defeat viral diseases. This book provides a broadly comprehensive series of reviews describing the replication strategies used for both DNA and RNA viruses, their interaction with the host immune system, and their potential role in tumorigenicity and cancer immunotherapy as applied to various viruses of critical relevance for human or animal diseases.

BOOK EXCERPT:
the discovery of the "splicing" of the gene transcripts, the list would include the whole molecular genetics of the lambda bacteriophage, the notions of "promotor," "repressor," and "integration," the discovery of the reverse flow of genetic information, the very existence of oncogenes, the S'-terminal "cap" struc ture of eukaryotic mRNAs, ... Electronmicroscopy, ultracentrifugation and tissue culture were the landmarks on the way of the young science. During the past few years, however, a major (and not so silent) revolution took place: recombinant DNA technology with all its might entered in our laboratories, and restriction mapping of cloned genomes and sequencing gels have replaced plaque counting and sucrose gradients. The new techniques have made it possible to "dissect" the entire genome of a virus at the molecular level, and studies that would have been dreamt of just in the mid-seventies became the everyday experiments of our days. With new insight into the structure of viral genomes, and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that regulate their expression, our view of viruses was bound to change: this volume bears witness to this impressive advance.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book addresses the innovative themes in characterizing the cellular membrane platforms and intracellular networking, as well as the architectural aspects of cell compartments mediated by the entry and replication cycles of viruses. The instrumentation of modern molecular and cellular biology provides a potent array of wave packets to image, detect and manipulate major dynamics of macromolecular and subviral assemblies as in the host cellular context. The book includes case studies presented with highly coherent and structured illuminations, including microscopy, spectroscopy and scanning probes. The compilation and integration of the methodology provides time-resolved observations on the reactivity of structures from near-atomic resolution to various molecular or cellular levels of descriptors. The book provides a broad introduction to the various fascinating virus systems and may be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students in biomedicine. It provides adequate background material to explore further the research problems of epidemics in the 21st century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Viruses are major pathogens in humans, and in the organisms with which we share this planet. The massive health and economic burden these agents impose has spurred a huge research effort to understand their most intimate details. One outcome of this effort has been the production, in many but certainly not all cases, of effective vaccines and therapies. - other consequence has been the realization that we can exploit viruses and put them to work on our behalf. Viruses are still seen to have the most - tential as vehicles for gene delivery and other therapeutic applications. However, their ability to exploit cellular functions to their own ends makes viruses not only highly effective pathogens but also exquisite experimental tools. Work with viruses underpins much of our current understanding of molecular cell biology and related fields. For membrane traffic in parti- lar, viruses have been crucial in providing insights into key cellular fu- tions and the molecular mechanisms underlying these events.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This atlas presents 233 virus diagrams selected for their scientific content, clarity, originality, and historic, didactic, and aesthetic value. Virus Life in Diagrams assembles the many diagrams of viral life cycles, particle assembly, and strategies of nucleic acid replication that are scattered throughout the literature. The diagrams cover vertebrate, invertebrate, plant, bacterial, fungal, and protozoal viruses, viroids, and prions. They offer a dynamic illustration of the time course of viral life cycles not available in photographs. They also offer speculative elements that project the possible results of future research, as well as historical documentation that shows the development of virology. This valuable reference book for virologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, geneticists, and students in these areas is the first atlas to compile illustrations of viral morphogenesis in one complete source.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Based on the highly successful reference work Viral Pathogenesis published in 1997, this concise, economical version can be used both as an introductory text or for self-education by medical students and biologists alike. This latest edition provides a completely revised overview of the subject with new chapters on innate immunity, emerging viral diseases, and antiviral therapy in a format that is easy to understand without continually referring to additional information. Used by the author in his graduate classes at the University of Pennsylvania, it sets forth the essential principles and discusses the details of how the immune system responds to viral invasion including the treatment and prevention of infection. Illustrated by pertinent examples it is one of the only books devoted exclusively to this topic.* Offers almost a 20% expansion over the first edition * Focuses specifically on viral pathogenesis unlike other texts where only a few chapters are devoted to the topic* Neal Nathanson is one of the primary authorities in the field and has authored chapters on viral pathogenesis in two of the most well known virology and microbiology titles Field's Virology and Topley and Wilson's Microbiology* Now in four color throughout!
