BOOK EXCERPT:

This open access book explores the role visual tools and graphical models play in safety management. It explains the importance of visualising safety, for teaching concepts, communicating ideas to peers, and raising awareness of potential threats through posters. Visualising Safety, an Exploration introduces graphical models which have been influential in promoting ideas of safety, and impacting the organisational design of safety mechanisms, including the Heinreich ‘safety pyramid’ and Reason’s ‘Swiss Cheese’. It analyses these models, as well as other forms of visualization, presenting viewpoints from academics and practitioners in the fields of safety science, history, ethnography and interface design. This brief will be of interest to anyone working in the field of safety management and design, including researchers, managers and students.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited book explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. It will enable those interested in visualisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the applications that can be used in visualisation, imaging and analysis, education, engagement and training. The reader will be able to explore the utilisation of technologies from a number of fields to enable an engaging and meaningful visual representation of the biomedical sciences, with a focus in this volume related to anatomy, and clinically applied scenarios. The first six chapters in this volume show the wide variety of tools and methodologies that digital technologies and visualisation techniques can be utilised and adopted in the educational setting. This ranges from body painting, clinical neuroanatomy, histology and veterinary anatomy through to real time visualisations and the uses of digital and social media for anatomical education. The last four chapters represent the diversity that technology has to be able to use differing realities and 3D capture in medical visualisation, and how remote visualisation techniques have developed. Finally, it concludes with an analysis of image overlays and augmented reality and what the wider literature says about this rapidly evolving field.

Bim And Construction Health And Safety

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book aims to conceptualise the implementation of building information modelling (BIM) in the workplace health and safety (WHS) management of construction projects to reduce occupational accidents. The safety performance of the construction industry has always been a concern across the globe, and this devastating reputation has drawn the concern of many nations. The potential functions of BIM can drastically alter the WHS practices of the construction industry. BIM facilitates WHS information exchange and management and supports better collaboration and project planning through virtual visualisation of the construction WHS management process. Despite an increasing interest in BIM, a successful mechanism for employing BIM in construction WHS management is absent. Therefore, this book aims to fill this dearth by presenting a model for the integration of such innovative interventions with the current industry practices in a practical manner through the proper identification of effective areas and evaluation of their impacts on the key criteria of construction projects and organisations. This approach will foster the implementation of BIM in the current state of WHS management in the industry and can potentially reduce occupational accidents on construction sites. This book is essential reading for researchers and professionals interested in how BIM technology can improve health and safety on construction projects. It is intended for engineers, project managers, construction managers, safety officers and safety managers.

Safety Cultures Safety Models

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The objective of this book is to help at-risk organizations to decipher the “safety cloud”, and to position themselves in terms of operational decisions and improvement strategies in safety, considering the path already travelled, their context, objectives and constraints. What link can be established between safety culture and safety models in order to increase safety within companies carrying out dangerous activities? First, while the term “safety culture” is widely shared among the academic and industrial world, it leads to various interpretations and therefore different positioning when it comes to assess, improve or change it. Many safety theories, concepts, and models coexist today, being more or less appealing and/or directly useful to the industry. How, and based on which criteria, to choose from the available options? These are some of the questions addressed in this book, which benefits from the expertise of its worldwide famous authors in several industrial sectors.

Artificial Intelligence And Visualization Advancing Visual Knowledge Discovery

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Zusammenfassung: This book continues a series of Springer publications devoted to the emerging field of Integrated Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with Visual Knowledge Discovery and Visual Analytics that combine advances in both fields. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning face long-standing challenges of explainability and interpretability that underpin trust. Such attributes are fundamental to both decision-making and knowledge discovery. Models are approximations and, at best, interpretations of reality that are transposed to algorithmic form. A visual explanation paradigm is critically important to address such challenges, as current studies demonstrate in salience analysis in deep learning for images and texts. Visualization means are generally effective for discovering and explaining high-dimensional patterns in all high-dimensional data, while preserving data properties and relations in visualizations is challenging. Recent developments, such as in General Line Coordinates, open new opportunities to address such challenges. This book contains extended papers presented in 2021 and 2022 at the International Conference on Information Visualization (IV) on AI and Visual Analytics, with 18 chapters from international collaborators. The book builds on the previous volume, published in 2022 in the Studies in Computational Intelligence. The current book focuses on the following themes: knowledge discovery with lossless visualizations, AI/ML through visual knowledge discovery with visual analytics case studies application, and visual knowledge discovery in text mining and natural language processing. The intended audience for this collection includes but is not limited to developers of emerging AI/machine learning and visualization applications, scientists, practitioners, and research students. It has multiple examples of the current integration of AI/machine learning and visualization for visual knowledge discovery, visual analytics, and text and natural language processing. The book provides case examples for future directions in this domain. New researchers find inspiration to join the profession of the field of AI/machine learning through a visualization lens.
