BOOK EXCERPT:
Today's project manager has more to manage than just project scope, deliverables, communications and teams. They are also expected to manage large volumes of project-related data. And the expectation goes beyond just managing the data. It extends into creating great visualizations that allow stakeholders to fully digest that large volume of data in a manner that is quick, effective and clear. They are also expected to serve as facilitators in the use of visual thinking tools as a method for working through project issues, risks and problems. These new expectations require new skills. The era of multi-page, text-based project status reporting is over. The era of visual project management is here. Time to "skill up!"

Visual Studio 2005 Team System is a large and complex product, and is arguably the most sophisticated development environment that Microsoft has ever built. It has enormous potential to improve people’s working lives by allowing them to draw together disparate tasks within a single reporting and testing structure. In order to do this people need a guide, and this book provides that guidance. It walks readers through a fictional scenario containing all the problems that Team System was built to remedy and shows how the product can be best applied to solve the problems of architects, developers, testers and project managers alike.

BOOK EXCERPT:
You can have the best coders in the world working in your teams, but if your project management isn’t up to scratch, your project is almost certain to be delayed, to come in over budget, and in some cases to fail entirely. By taking precise control of your application development process, you can make changes, both large and small, throughout your project’s life cycle that will lead to better–quality finished products that are consistently delivered on time and within budget. Application lifecycle management (ALM) is an area of rapidly growing interest within the development community. Because its techniques allow you to deal with the process of developing applications across many areas of responsibility and across many different disciplines, its effects on your project can be wide ranging and pronounced. It is a project management tool that has practical implications for the whole team—from architects to designers, from developers to testers. Pro Application Lifecycle Management with Visual Studio 2012 focuses on the most powerful ALM tool available for the Microsoft .NET Framework: Visual Studio Team Foundation Server. It demonstrates the key concepts and techniques of ALM at first with a guide to the overall methodology, and then delves into architecture and testing--illustrating all of the concepts, tips and tricks using the tools TFS provides. The book serves as a complete guide to the ALM style--with no fluff and many relevant code samples and examples. After reading the book, you will understand how TFS can be used to generate continuous meaningful reporting on your project’s health for the decision makers on your team as well as for your project’s sponsors.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This synthesis presents a review of the current practices associated with the techniques and policies employed by state and local transportation agencies to address the many project development issues required for the reconstruction of existing urban and suburban freeways and expressways. This topic is of special interest because there is a need to reconstruct many highway facilities that have been in existence for over 40 years. The need arises both from the deterioration of the infrastructure and from changes in capacity requirements. This synthesis will be of interest to state and local highway design engineers, traffic engineers, finance and contracting specialists, and contracting personnel in these agencies. It will also be of interest to consultants who are engaged in freeway/expressway reconstruction projects. While many of the project development methodologies in practice for reconstruction of urban and suburban freeways and expressways are similar to those used for new construction, there are unique differences that apply primarily to the reconstruction of major urban highway facilities. This report of the Transportation Research Board highlights the similarities and differences in the planning and management of projects as well as in contracting and financing innovations. Methods for effectively managing traffic during the reconstruction process are important to the process, as are traffic control procedures in the work zone. Public participation and public information dissemination related to traffic changes are vitally important to the effective completion of a reconstruction project. Other aspects, such as the design process, including the use of 3-D and 4-D visualization, pavement renewal procedures, environmental impact mitigation and enhancement activities, that are considered in the process are also addressed.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Modern project management is different from what it was ten years ago. New methods and tools have been developed, the number of projects and members in project teams has increased, professionalism in project management has generally increased, and projects have become highly complex. Parallel to this, artificial intelligence, automation, information and communication technology, human resources management, and many other areas are being developed, which will continue to impact project management in the future significantly. At the same time, new generations of young people are entering the labour market with different needs and expectations for project work. The authors of the book provide decision-makers, project workers, and students with an insight into the modern challenges of project management due to digitization, artificial intelligence and project economy. The book is based on knowledge of classic management principles but does not follow them blindly, arguing that modern project management is based on people, their values, and the intelligent use of methods, techniques, and emerging technologies.
