Forests are very important for the world's population and large and play critical role in the Earth's life support system, including global carbon and hydrological cycles. This publication provides an overview of the global trends in forest cover and looks specifically at the four largest forest ecosystems and analyses the trends and challenges in their conservation and management. It scrutinizes some of the key drivers behind forest loss, including the increasing demand for commodities and energy. Finally it reviews some of the best practices for sustainable management of forest, including regulatory regimes, participatory management and economic incentives

Environmental protection is one of the areas where the Balkan countries still face a big challenge to catch up with their western neighbors. After the 1990s conflicts and the breakup of Yugoslavia, six new Balkan states emerged. Apart from integrating environmental concerns into the new policies, a major challenge is environmental management across new borders. What used to be six international river basins in the Balkans have now evolved into 13 internationally shared river basins and four transboundary lake basins. The situation is similar for areas of high ecological value, many of which are often located in mountainous border areas. To ensure effective protection, entire ecosystems have to be addressed regardless of the political borders that are dividing them on a map. Transboundary cooperation between countries sharing one or more natural resources is therefore indispensable for creating common frameworks that promote their sustainable use while offering an opportunity for confidence-building between cooperating countries.

Firs and pines dominated the global picture of the raw materials for paper industry until the 1950s. At that time, the interest in introducing new species, mostly hardwoods, led the researchers intensify efforts to look for the fibrous characteristics and their combinations that could represent the relationship between fibres, pulp and paper.The pulp and paper industry has shown, mainly in the last two decades, a strong North-South displacement. This is to a large extent due to the favourable climate, which promote the development of the trees. Similarly, the paper fibres have gone from being almost exclusively softwoods from natural forests of the Northern-Hemisphere cold regions, such as spruce and fir, to fast growing species of short fibres, such as eucalyptus, and willow and poplar hybrids from plantations.These new species, that begin to dominate the paper panorama, not only differ from classic ones in fibre length, but they present particular characteristics, like large amounts of juvenile wood, different fibrillar angle and so on, because trees are used increasingly at younger age.This leads us to question whether the old paradigms concerning the relationships between fibres characteristics and pulp properties are still valid or should be reviewed and updated, in which case, the basic fibre parameters, their influence in pulping and refining, and their impact on paper quality should be redefined.To establish the state-of-the-art on the topic, this book analyses the publications of the last decade to verify the morphological characteristics of the fibres which are nowadays considered relevant. Relatively recent data were surveyed because of the continuous changes that occur in the species by genetic improvement.

In doing so, it illustrates the conceptual and practical opportunities as well as challenges involved with planning for forest ecosystem services across landscapes, regions, and nations.
