The Routledge Handbook of Modern Japanese Literature provides a comprehensive overview of how we study Japanese literature today. In the nineteenth century, the hotly disputed border region between Denmark and Germany was the focus of an intricate conflict that complicates questions of ethnic and national identity even today. Yoginder Sikand discovers a country that only remotely resembles the stereotype of the hostile Muslim neighbour all too common in the Indian imagination. The idea that the American Great Plains and the Canadian Prairies are just "fly-over" country is a mistake.
