BOOK EXCERPT:
A complex world surrounds the project team. Led by a project manager and judged by the board of directors, executives, customers, and employees, it would be tempting to ask why anyone would choose to work within such an environment, let alone encourage and lead the organization on a potentially perilous road. The answer is simple - there is great joy in working with the talented and able participants engaged in a project while pursuing and satisfying the organization's needs. Prescribed procedures are part of project management. It is these procedures that provide stepping stones from where we are today and what we want and expect to be tomorrow. Many procedures and best practices are based on A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge and ISO 21500, Guidance on Project Management. These guides provide best practices and international standards as well as frameworks that are coupled with steps that should be followed to effectively implement the best practices. However, neither guide discusses how to ensure that people will welcome the results of a project with open arms and embrace wholeheartedly the impact that has been imposed on them. Since people are involved in these projects, their behavior and well-being must be provided for - especially when environmental and procedural changes are being made. Ignoring the psychological and emotional impact on people may result in project failure. It is the project manager's responsibility to examine, understand, and implement best practices, determine the level at which a best practice is used, and accommodate the physical and mental needs of people affected by the projects.

When asked what my book was about, I would almost instantly blurt out self-help; but as the book was coming to an end, I realized that the book was more than just a self-help book. This book is a product of the world and all the people in it. While writing, I knew I wanted to make people feel good about where they were in their lives and where they dream to be. And I believe I did that. This book takes the reader all over the place. African American history, peoples personal struggles, and just plain old encouragement will be discussed in this book. And I even take it a step further by sharing my personal struggles with everyone. This book should uplift all the readers, and I hope it does just that. So enjoy, and thank you for the support.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In an era of big data and data analytics, how can managers make decisions based on almost unlimited information, not to mention hiring and retaining individuals with the required data analytics skills? The new fourth edition of Essentials of Business Research Methods explains research methods and analytical techniques for individuals who aren't data scientists. The authors offer a straightforward, hands-on approach to the vital managerial process of gathering and using data to make relevant and timely business decisions. They include critical topics, such as the increasing role of online research, ethical issues, privacy matters, data analytics, customer relationship management, how to conduct information-gathering activities more effectively in a rapidly changing business environment, and more. This is also the only text that includes a chapter on qualitative data analysis, and the coverage of quantitative data analysis is more extensive as well as much easier to understand than in other texts. A realistic continuing case used throughout the book, applied research examples, and ethical dilemma mini cases enable upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students to see how business research information is used in the real world. This comprehensive textbook is supported by a range of online resources, including instructors’ manuals, PowerPoint slides, and test banks.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Why do we experience business cycles? What creates them? Is it mass psychology, or phenomena in the management of business? Are the banks to blame or should we be looking to the unions and the politicians? Lars Tvede's story moves back in time to the Scottish gambler and financial genius, John Law, and then on to the distracted Adam Smith, the stockbroker Ricardo, the investment banker Thornton, the extrovert Schumpeter, the speculator Jay Gould and many others. The computer jugglers of the modern day, with giant networks of equations, try to solve the same questions that have attracted the attention of classical economists throughout the centuries. Throughout this volume, business cycle theories are used to explain actual events. Theoretical thinking has reflected the economist's own experiences of hyper-inflations, depressions, speculation orgies and liquidity squeezes. The reader can follow the narrative to discover how economists often thought that problems had been solved until new data changed the economic picture once again.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book draws upon case studies and practices of different types of DRR involvement by the private sector from all over the world. The book comprises two parts, Part I: Overview and Regional Cases; and Part II: Country Cases. The regional cases include those from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central America, and the country cases include ones from India, Japan, the United States, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Nepal. DRR at the international level is discussed from the perspective of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). The perspective of the Asia–Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is presented in the discussion of DRR at the societal level. The private sector is becoming more active in disaster management and plays an important role in distributing relief items and sending search and rescue teams in the response phase. However, once the response stage is over, private sector involvement tends to fade. While a number of disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives by the private sector are documented, they remain limited. The private sector can contribute enormously to DRR by developing business continuity plans, innovating technology for early warning systems, and providing and sharing technical knowledge, skills, and resources in the field of disaster preparedness. To strengthen DRR capacity, it is crucial to involve the private sector as major actors in DRR. The primary target groups for this book are students and researchers in the fields of disaster management and DRR studies. Another target group comprises practitioners and policy makers, who will be able to apply the collective knowledge from this work to policy and decision making. The book provides an overview of the current research trends and furnishes basic knowledge on this important topic.
