"All children have imaginary friends, Georgina tells herself. It's perfectly normal, and they all grow out of it in the end. But when her seven-year-old son, Cody, tells her about New Granny, the new friend he's met in the park, Georgina is instantly suspicious. Something--call it maternal instinct--tells her he isn't making it up. Still, maybe Georgina is losing her mind. It wouldn't be the first time, after all. And with her own mother's recent death leaving her feeling bereft and overwhelmed as a busy working mom, it's no wonder she's feeling paranoid that Cody has invented a "New Granny" to replace his beloved grandmother. Her husband assures Georgina that it's just a game, the product of their son's overactive imagination. But what if Cody's imaginary friend isn't so imaginary after all?"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Fairy Book – The Best Popular Fairy Stories was originally published in 1913. It is a collection of classic children’s tales, compiled and edited by Dinah Craik, and illustrated by Warwick Goble. In the words of the author, it is intended as ‘the best collection attainable of that delight of all children, and of many grown people who retain the child-heart still – the old-fashioned, time-honoured classic Fairy Tale. It includes the narratives of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and many more. Warwick Goble (1862 – 1943) was an illustrator of children’s books, who specialised in Japanese and Indian themes. The son of a commercial traveller, he was educated at the Westminster School of art, and specialised in chromolithographic printing. His work is delicate in its colouring, and masterful in its presentation of line and form. Some of Goble’s best known works include illustrations for Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Every day she comes and stands, turning slowing, counterclockwise, in the parking lot. She holds in her arms a bundle of infant's clothes. She is praying, calling for her departed child to return to the nest of her body. In A Strange Catechism, Justen Ahren relates the story of a mother and her surviving son, as they journey through grief, lose and separation to a deeper understanding of how life is constructed out of what our fingers keep making in the air/ until dawn' those fleeting things we long for, made real by our longing and our praying for them. "The poems in Justen Ahren's Strange Catechism are songs whose music exists to make beauty out of profound sadness. They are rhythmic, empathic, and polyphonic but behind each one is a voice who says hello to darkness and then sings to it all the while wondering about golondrinas' and the hydrangeas' blue clouds', all the while wondering if the world without [him]/may be the real one.'" --Jennifer Tseng "This collection contains the voice of a poet whose work aches with beauty. The poems are characterized by the paradox of austerity as abundance and religious mystery as lucidity. In Justen Ahren's search for grace we find poetry of excellence." --Jennifer Clement

BOOK EXCERPT:
Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's "Coloured" Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources, who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English. As acknowledged in the prefaces, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual stories. The Blue Fairy Book assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norse stories, among other sources.
