Unusual place names evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. How did a place come to be called the "Wolf Pen" or the "Shot Factory"? Where in the world were the "Indian Old Fields" and "Brandenburg's Mill"? Researching these names often reveals fascinating stories about local history, families, events, and politics. Clark County, Kentucky is blessed with many such interesting places. The articles in this book are collected from a column in the Winchester Sun called "Where in the World? " Each article describes an historic place or person in Clark County, some well known, some not so well known. The articles were written for the Bluegrass Heritage Museum in hopes of fostering an interest in local history and the Museum. This book is intended to do the same. This work includes 62 articles that appeared in the Sun between September 6, 2007 to June 3, 2016. A few articles were updated for this publication after additional information became available.

Did you ever hear the name of a place and wonder "where in the world was that?" Answering that question about quaint and historic places in Clark County, Kentucky, became the basis of a regular column in the Winchester Sun called "Where In The World?" The series began on January 6, 2005, with "Bramblett's Lick." This is the third published volume of those collected columns. Previous volumes contained 162 articles published between 2005 and 2016. This volume continues the series with 56 articles that appeared in the Sun from June 2016 to March 2018. There are fewer articles in this volume because more recent articles are much longer than the early ones. Each article describes a historic location or notable person in Clark County, some well known, some not so well known. Some articles were updated from the newspaper version as additional information became available.

Volume II documents and analyses genocide and extermination throughout the early modern and modern eras. It tracks their global expansion as European and Asian imperialisms, and Euroamerican settler colonialism, spread across the globe before the Great War, forging new frontiers and impacting Indigenous communities in Europe, Asia, North America, Africa, and Australia. Twenty-five historians with expertise on specific regions explore examples on five continents, providing comparisons of nine cases of conventional imperialism with nineteen of settler colonialism, and offering a substantial basis for assessing the various factors leading to genocide. This volume also considers cases where genocide did not occur, permitting a global consideration of the role of imperialism and settler-Indigenous relations from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. It ends with six pre-1918 cases from Australia, China, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe that can be seen as 'premonitions' of the major twentieth-century genocides in Europe and Asia.

Brothers James Goff, John Turton Goff (d. 1803), Thomas Goff (1747-1824) and Salathiel Goff (d. 1791), were probably born in England or Wales. They emigrated and settled in Virginia and Maryland. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

Christian County had published a county history in 1841 by Perin and again another by Charles Meachem in 1930. Both of these histories had a limited biography section in them. Under the leadership of president Lon Bostick, the Genealogical Society of Christian County and the many devoted people of the county at large, gave untiringly of their time and knowledge to compile and have published a third history of Christian County in 1986 which is primarily a family history with much social history. The people responded well with material and the book was getting so large that we had to stop receiving family histories. This left many without the opportunity to get their families recorded. Late in 1990, Lon had a job started and was not complete therefore the Odd Fellows of Green River Lodge #54 of Hopkinsville and Jewel Rebekah Lodge #14 (the auxiliary of the Odd Fellows) met and voted to compile and have published a continuation of Volume I of the Family Histories to be titled Edition I of Family Histories of Christian County.

Reconstructing William Allen 1711-1799 is a combination history, biography, and genealogy of this immigrant from Northern Ireland who came to America in 1729. It explores not only the facts of his life, but places them within the context of the historical events of his time. It also attempts to build a picture of the communities within which he lived. In order to provide as broad a picture as possible, the book includes a social history of the Scots-Irish people, who spent a century or so in Northern Ireland before coming to America en masse during the 18th century. Also included: appendices with research notes, bibliography, and index. 518 pages, hardback.

The biographies of more than 800 women form the basis for Elna Green's study of the suffrage and the antisuffrage movements in the South. Green's comprehensive analysis highlights the effects that factors such as class background, marital status, educational level, and attitudes about race and gender roles had in inspiring the region's women to work in favor of, or in opposition to, their own enfranchisement. Green sketches the ranks of both movements--which included women and men, black and white--and identifies the ways in which issues of class, race, and gender determined the composition of each side. Coming from a wide array of beliefs and backgrounds, Green argues, southern women approached enfranchisement with an equally varied set of strategies and ideologies. Each camp defined and redefined itself in opposition to the other. But neither was entirely homogeneous: issues such as states' rights and the enfranchisement of black women were so divisive as to give rise to competing organizations within each group. By focusing on the grassroots constituency of each side, Green provides insight into the whole of the suffrage debate.

On April 1, 1865, the steamboat Bertrand, a sternwheeler bound from St. Louis to Fort Benton in Montana Territory, hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank twenty miles north of Omaha. The crew removed only a few items before the boat was silted over. For more than a century thereafter, the Bertrand remained buried until it was discovered by treasure hunters, its cargo largely intact. This book categorizes some 300,000 artifacts recovered from the Bertrand in 1968, and also describes the invention, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and sale of these products and traces their route to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory. The ship and its contents are a time capsule of mid-nineteenth-century America, rich with information about the history of industry, technology, and commerce in the Trans-Missouri West. In addition to enumerating the items the boat was transporting to Montana, and offering a photographic sample of the merchandise, Switzer places the Bertrand itself in historical context, examining its intended use and the technology of light-draft steam-driven river craft. His account of steamboat commerce provides multiple insights into the industrial revolution in the East, the nature and importance of Missouri River commerce in the mid-1800s, and the decline in this trade after the Civil War. Switzer also introduces the people associated with the Bertrand. He has unearthed biographical details illuminating the private and social lives of the officers, crew members, and passengers, as well as the consignees to whom the cargo was being shipped. He offers insight into not only the passengers’ reasons for traveling to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory, but also the careers of some of the entrepreneurs and political movers and shakers of the Upper Missouri in the 1860s. This unique reference for historians of commerce in the American West will also fascinate anyone interested in the technology and history of riverine transport.
