BOOK EXCERPT:
The hyphen between the date you were born, and the day you die, represents the length and breadth of your life. We are all assigned a certain number of days upon this planet. What will you do with those days? What will you give in exchange for this day? We all leave footprints of our presence and influence. At the end of it all will anyone really know or care that you have passed through this life? All of us have been created for relationships. We need each other in some way or other. We need to be loved, and to be able to extend love. That is what this book is about. Real people traverse the pages you are about to unfold. They have made choices every day, to either coast through life, leaving a lot of relational rubbish behind, or make a positive difference to another person. There is a price for loving another. Within these pages you will discover that price. The walking wounded crowd our world today. Those who have experienced the early shortfalls of toxic parenting. Those who have discovered they must always be wary and defensive in the face of a perceived and hostile world. Those who are ill-equipped to meet the demands of living in an impersonal world. Love is a choice. We each have within ourselves the longing to be loved and cared about by at least one other person. Love is reciprocal. When we give love, we mostly receive love. Love is not manipulative or deceitful. The pure essence of unconditional love penetrates to the depth of our very souls. It's not about perfect people, for it is the wounded, abused and damaged who rise above the legacy they have been handed to embrace another human being. The author has experienced love in the fullest, even in the midst of loss, travail and tragedy. Loving another is risky, not for the faint of heart. Unless we extend that love, and embrace it's benefits, we mangle that hyphen between the beginning and the end. Your life will be made richer and enlightened by the authors revealing experiences of those who have reaped the rewards of caring for another human being. It is written for two categories of people, those who are loved , and those who longingly desire to be loved.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Late ’70s San Francisco. The Summer of Love is a hazy memory, the AIDS crisis is looming, and nearby Silicon Valley is still an obscure place where microchips are made. The City by the Bay is reeling from a string of bizarre tragedies that have earned it a new name: the “kook capital of the world.” Yet out of the darkness comes a creative rebirth, instigated by punk and sustained by the steady influx of outsiders who view the city as a place of refuge, a last resort. What ensues is a collision of sounds and ideas that spans the golden age of analog DIY culture, from the dark cabaret of Tuxedomoon and Factrix, the apocalyptic sounds of Minimal Man and Flipper, the conceptual humor of Gregg Turkington’s Amarillo Records; through to the subversive pop music of Faith No More, the left-field experimentalism of Caroliner, Mr. Bungle, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and much more. Drawing on extensive research—including interviews with over 100 musicians, artists, and other key players—WHO CARES ANYWAY is the first book to chronicle the wild post-punk San Francisco music scene, courtesy of those who lived it. It’s a tale full of existential drama, tragic anti-heroes, dark humor, spectacular failures—and even a few improbable successes.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Valerie Polakow spent a year traveling around the country listening to low-income women from diverse backgrounds tell their stories of struggle, resilience, distress, and occasional success as they encountered ongoing child care crises. The resulting work is both a compelling account of the lived realities of the child care crisis, and an incisive critique of public policy that points to the United States as an outlier in the international community. Drawing on historical and international perspectives, Polakow creates a groundbreaking analysis of child care as a human right, persuasively arguing for a universal child care system. “Who Cares for Our Children? is one of the most disturbing books I have read in a long time. It should have a major impact on debates over poverty and social policy.” —From the Foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed “In this beautifully written and provocative volume, Polakow deftly steps aside and lets real mothers, struggling against the odds to keep their families safe and sound, speak for themselves about what they need. This book delivers a timely message: Child care should be viewed as a human right.” —Martha F. Davis, Northeastern University School of Law “A collection of moving and often chilling personal narratives. . . . Who Cares for Our Children? is a powerful and well-documented analysis of the worlds of low-income families.” —Beth Blue Swadener, Arizona State University “Thoroughly researched and grounded in a heartfelt sympathy for the struggles of families . . . that face such painful choices and dilemmas in meeting the needs of their children.” —James Garbarino, Loyola University Chicago

BOOK EXCERPT:
The last 20 years has seen an enormous increase in our knowledge about the management of patients with terminal renal failure. Despite this, even the most successful dialysis and transplant patients require long term specialist supervision so that renal units will have an incremental work load until the death rate of patients undergoing treatment equals the rate of intake of new patients. Furthermore, innumerable conditions which were once regarded as contraindications to therapy may no longer be seen in this light, so that the number of new patients coming forward for treatment each year is increasing rapidly. Dialysis and transplantation are expensive forms of treatment, in terms of staff, facilities and consumables, and it is therefore inevitable that there will be problems in providing treatment for all who need it. These will be particularly acute in times of economic crisis. This book contains the proceedings of a conference which was set up to explore the difference between the supply and the demand for treatment in the United Kingdom, to compare the situation with that in other countries, to explore possible solutions and possibly assign responsibility for the shortfall and to examine the practical and moral implications of our failure to treat the treatable.
