BOOK EXCERPT:
The Internet is subject to permanent modi?cations and to continuous restr- turing. This is primarily due to the tremendous rise in demand for bandwidth by the ever increasing number of users. When compared to the early years of the Internet the quality of the services o?ered had to be signi?cantly improved in di?erent respects (delay, network and service availability, jitter,. . . )inorder to satisfy the needs of many new applications. Within the last decade two new developments have contributed to many new opportunities, as well as to a need for intensive research and development: – the increased mobility of users together with the desire for ubiquitous hi- quality access to all o?ered services, at reasonable cost; – the use of wireless communication. Despite their relatively low capacity (when compared with ?xed backbone n- works) the use of radio links supports the ubiquitous availability of Internet services in a quasiperfect way. A considerable amount of research and development activities are currently - ing on worldwide in order to adapt Internet services to the particular needs of mobile users and of wireless communication links. These questions were - tensively discussed at the ?rst workshop organized by the EURO-NGI Network of Excellence (‘Next Generation Internet’), which has been funded by the - ropean Union since January 2004 under their IST programme.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Recent years have witnessed tremendous growth in the population of mobile users demanding high performance, reliability and quality-of-service (QoS). Wireless networks are undergoing rapid developments and dramatic changes in the underlying technologies, in order to cope with the difficulties posed by the scarce wireless resource as well as keep up with the increasing day-to-day demand for cost-effective service of multimedia applications. Predicting and optimising the performance and QoS of wireless networks using analytical modelling, simulation experiments, monitoring and testbed-based measurements are crucial to the proper design, tuning, resource management and capacity planning of such networks. This book is dedicated to review important developments and results, explore recent state-of-the-art research and discuss new strategies for performance modelling, analysis and enhancement of wireless networks. The objective is to make analytical modelling, simulation and measurement tools, and innovative performance evaluation methodology possible and understandable to a wider audience.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Next Generation Wireless Systems and Networks offers an expert view of cutting edge Beyond 3rd Generation (B3G) wireless applications. This self-contained reference combines the basics of wireless communications, such as 3G wireless standards, spread spectrum and CDMA systems, with a more advanced level research-oriented approach to B3G communications, eliminating the need to refer to other material. This book will provide readers with the most up-to-date technological developments in wireless communication systems/networks and introduces the major 3G standards, such as W-CDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA. It also includes a focus on cognitive radio technology and 3GPP E-UTRA technology; areas which have not been well covered elsewhere. Covers many hot topics in the area of next generation wireless from the authors’ own research, including: Bluetooth, all-IP wireless networking, power-efficient and bandwidth-efficient air-link technologies, and multi-user signal processing in B3G wireless Clear, step-by-step progression throughout the book will provide the reader with a thorough grounding in the basic topics before moving on to more advanced material Addresses various important topics on wireless communication systems and networks that have emerged only very recently, such as Super-3G technology, 4G wireless, UWB, OFDMA and MIMO Includes a wealth of explanatory tables and illustrations This essential reference will prove invaluable to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics and researchers. It will also be of interest to telecommunications engineers wishing to further their knowledge in this field.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The network management community has been pushed towards the design of alternative management approaches able to support heterogeneity, scalability, reliability, and minor human intervention. The employment of self-* properties and Peer-To-Peer (P2P) are seen as promising alternatives, able to provide the sophisticated solutions required. Despite being developed in parallel, and with minor direct connections perceived between them, self-* properties and P2P can be used concurrently. In Self-* and P2P for Network Management: Design Principles and Case Studies, the authors explore the issues behind the joint use of self-* properties and P2P, and present: a survey relating autonomic computing and self-* properties, P2P, and network and service management; the design of solutions that explore parallel and cooperative behavior of management peers; the change in angle of network management solution development from APIs, protocols, architectures, and frameworks to the design of management algorithms.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The new edition of this popular book has been transformed into a hands-on textbook, focusing on the principles of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), their applications, their protocols and standards, and their analysis and test tools; a meticulous care has been accorded to the definitions and terminology. To make WSNs felt and seen, the adopted technologies as well as their manufacturers are presented in detail. In introductory computer networking books, chapters sequencing follows the bottom up or top down architecture of the seven layers protocol. This book starts some steps later, with chapters ordered based on a topic’s significance to the elaboration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) concepts and issues. With such a depth, this book is intended for a wide audience, it is meant to be a helper and motivator, for both the senior undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and practitioners; concepts and WSNs related applications are laid out, research and practical issues are backed by appropriate literature, and new trends are put under focus. For senior undergraduate students, it familiarizes readers with conceptual foundations, applications, and practical project implementations. For graduate students and researchers, transport layer protocols and cross-layering protocols are presented and testbeds and simulators provide a must follow emphasis on the analysis methods and tools for WSNs. For practitioners, besides applications and deployment, the manufacturers and components of WSNs at several platforms and testbeds are fully explored.
