BOOK EXCERPT:
Pastoral care instruction and observation from a therapist of survivors of sexual abuse. "The Abuse of Power is 'must' reading for clergy and denominational officials.... Weaving case stories with theory, Poling demonstrates that sexual abuse of children is not a private matter, but very much a matter for society and church--a question of structure and ideology, not just of individual character. He is not afraid to tackle the tough question: Does the image of God sacrificing Jesus on the cross contribute to abusive parent-child relationships?...If pastors and church officials read this book the church will change." --Karen Lebacqz, Pacific School of Religion "For the exploitation of women and children to stop, men must be willing to break ranks with all forms of privilege that sanction male dominance. James Poling does so by deconstructing his own sense of male entitlement, by refusing to distance himself from perpetrators, by allowing survivors of sexual and domestic violence to speak with their own voices, by giving us profound words of hope, and by articulating a powerfully healing theology wrought through the depths of his own struggle with one of the worst evils in our society. His courageous and compassionate work reveals the love and hope that is born of solidarity across the boundaries of gender, sexual orientation, race, and economics....The psychological, political, spiritual, and theological power of this book is such that all educators, ministers, therapists, and Christians must read it." --Rita Nakashima Brock, Hamline University Chapter titles are: 1. Hearing the Silenced Voices 2. Power and Abuse of Power 3. "Karen": Survivor of Sexual Violence 4. Stories of Recovering Perpetrators 5. The Schreber Case: Methods of Analysis 6. BOOK EXCERPT:
'I strongly agree with the central message of [the] book...that we need a sense of moral compass in politics... Put together it's pretty shocking' Rory Stewart on The Rest is Politics: Leading As Prime Minister and Home Secretary, Theresa May came face-to-face with a series of issues in which the abuse of power led to devastating results for individuals and significantly damaged the trust in public institutions and politicians. From the Grenfell tragedy to parliamentary scandals, the powerful repeatedly chose to act not in the interests of the powerless but in ways that served themselves. The Abuse of Power is a searing exposé of injustice and an impassioned call to exercise power for the greater good. Drawing on examples from domestic and international affairs she was personally involved in at the highest level, the former prime minister argues for a radical rethink in how we approach our politics and public life. 'A serious-minded study of scandals in which vulnerable people were failed by those in authority' Guardian Best Politics Books of 2023 'The book will reinforce the view that May was a politician of conviction and compassion' Robert Shrimsley, Financial Times 'A valuable read' Charlotte Ivers, Times Best Politics and Current Affairs Books of 2023

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book deals specifically with the topic of the sexual abuse of power in black churches. This problem has been estimated to be three times as prevalent in the black churches, yet scant attention has been brought to bear on this subject. This book is meant to provide a framework for understanding the problem for the purpose of preventing its occurrence in the context of the black church. It examines the history of sexual ethics in the black community as a means of understanding its deep-seated place in the life of the black churches. The book uses the narratives of black women and children who have been the primary victims of this abuse. It identifies the major social and psychological reasons why and how this abuse develops and continues. It is directed to pastors and leaders of the church who wish to put an end to this injustice that is largely born of ignorance and the adoption of a sexual ethic that is derived from slavery and it effects.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In recent years the issue of domestic abuse and violence has gained a lot of attention as the extent of it has become known. Domestic abuse and violence is now of high concern to most churches because it is evident that domestic abuse figures are much the same in our churches, and possibly higher in evangelical churches where the headship of men and the submission of women is made the God-given ideal. In this book, Kevin Giles surveys competently the scientific information on this matter now available and notes that the consensus is that the most sure indicator of higher incidences of abuse are found in communities where men are privileged and expected to be in charge and women are subordinated. This, he argues, should make complementarians consider afresh if in fact the subordination of women is the God-given ideal, established in creation before the fall.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The sexual abuse and exploitation of women by members of the clergy is not a new issue. What is new is the public's growing understanding of what is involved when members of the clergy ignore or repeatedly fall short of legal and ethical requirements to adhere to the expected standards of conduct. This work is based on the author's study of 25 women from 11 states who were sexually abused by members of the clergy. A primary goal of the study was to help the violated women understand their experiences and make available to educators, practitioners and others concrete information about what it means to be sexually exploited by a trusted religious representative. The author also considers the viability of a trauma model to study the impact of such sexual abuse on women and on their relationships with others, and presents her findings that the participants did exhibit symptoms that strongly correspond with the classical and complex trauma criteria used.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Abusive power by the pastors and church leadership is real and comes to our church members in many ways. It can be about church leader's violating boundaries, betraying trust, breaching confidentiality, and lying about what a church leader said or did. This book challenges the appeal process (council, classis, synod) of the Christian Reformed Church. Although the appeal process was not designed for abuse allegations, it is what is used when victims come forward with abuse of power allegations. Read about weaknesses of the appeal process and how change in the appeal process could create a safer church for all.
